This is what Matt Doherty brings. Another reason it's a GREAT hire.

When was the last time we got mention in the NY Daily News and the NY Post in the same week?

"SMU woos Doherty

What do Matt Doherty and Larry Brown have in common? Both grew up on Long Island. Both played at UNC for Dean Smith. Only one, of course, realized his ultimate "dream job" and got to coach the Tar Heels. Unceremoniously fired the year before his recruits won the NCAA title for Roy Williams, Doherty took some time off before being hired by Florida Atlantic University. After one fairly successful season (15-13), he's being aggressively recruited by SMU for 21/2 times his current (180G) pay, plus a passel of perks. We know money motivates Brown. We'll see if it's enough to move Doherty. Should he bolt, assistant/former NBA guard Rex Walters figures to get the promotion."

I was under the impression that if Doherty comes to the Hilltop, Walters would come with him as his top assistant. Anyone know?

Highly doubt Walters would pass up the head gig @ FAU - they are, by the way, at least moving up from Atlantic Sun to Sunbelt.

I expect that depends in part on how much of a budgetary increase Coach Doherty is seeking for his assistants. The chance to be the head coach at FAU in the Sunbelt, or the chance to be Coach Doherty's assistant at SMU in C-USA -- and, if all goes well, get a crack at a bigger head coaching job or ride Coach Doherty's coattails to a bigger job in a bigger conference .... toss up. I don't suppose either is out of the question.
