By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News

UNIVERSITY PARK – Florida Atlantic coach Matt Doherty accepted a job offer to coach the SMU men’s basketball team, according to sources.

Doherty met with SMU president Gerald Turner on Sunday afternoon and agreed to terms.

Doherty will meet an 18-person search committee Monday afternoon for final approval.

Doherty and Turner were unavailable for comment.

Incoming athletic director Steve Orsini didn’t return a call seeking comment.

Doherty, most likely, will be introduced as the new coach Tuesday.

SMU is replacing Jimmy Tubbs, who was fired in early April.

Christmas comes early for SMU basketball! Can't wait for next year.

Who wants to go to the press conference ? I think it would be cool if we had a good turnout for it. I know a couple of us that will be headed from downtown to campus for the press conference if anyone wants to join.

Yea...

It would be sweet if there were a lot of people there, we need to support Doherty because he can take SMU basketball to the postseason as soon as next year.

Woo nellie....don't get ahead of yourself. This team has a lot of work to do and needs to fill LOTS of gaps. They had trouble scoring 50 pts with Hopkins. If coaching was a big part of that, we'll get to see what changes are made.

Sweet! This is the best SMU hire has made in the last 20 years. This has the potential to really change the landscape of SMU athletics. Maybe the Administration is as fed up as weare about losing b/c hiring Matt Doherty and what that means sends a loud message that SMU wants to be taken seriously again.

I am convinced that Doherty accepted the job on the condition that SMU is willing to make a commitment to its basketball program on the form of budgets, facilities and other concessions that make it more conducive to recruiting.

Go SMU. We'll be back in the big dance within 2-3 years.

postseason? Ignorant. I'll support him, but keep dreaming, Tubbs was just beginning a major rebuilding process here and now Brian Morris is gone. Doh doesnt have the horses to work with for at least a few years either. And whoever said Doh might have a shot at Darrell Arthur must be crazy. He didnt attract those recruits to UNC, Carolina Blue did. Doherty will be frozen out of Dallas. I dont take any comfort in telling you that, but its very likely. If i'm wrong, I promise you I will be the first to come on here and eat crow. Unlike some of you, I keep the same name on this board all the time and I'm not going anywhere.
