Spencer To Play For Team USA In Global Games
Team USA Begins Play Vs. Puerto Rico On Monday At 8p.m.

Cameron Spencer Will Play For Team USA

June 19, 2006

DALLAS (SMU) - Incoming SMU freshman, Cameron Spencer, will play his first game at Moody Coliseum as a member of the USA Global Games team on Monday evening. The first game for Team USA is against Puerto Rico at 8 p.m. Spencer is among seven players that will play collegiately in Texas and one of two that will play in Conference USA.

Spencer, a 6-9 power forward/post player from Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School in Orange, Texas, recorded solid numbers his senior season. He average 14 points, 10.7 rebounds, 4.5 blocks and 2.9 assists per game. Named to the 2006 Orange Leader first team, he was a 20-4A Coaches' All-District first-team selection and earned 20-4A Coaches' All-District Defensive MVP honors. Spencer's high school coach this past season was Darin Harley. During his first three years of high school, he was coached by Oliver Simmons. Spencer is part of the AAU basketball program DFW Select, coached by Vonzell Thomas.

"We are very excited about Cameron's signing," said Doherty. "He will have the opportunity to be a part of great things here at SMU. His academic background and character make him a great fit not only on the basketball court, but in the classroom as well. He embodies all of the characteristics that an SMU student-athlete should."

Team USA Schedule Monday, June 19 vs. Puerto Rico - 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 20 vs. Canada - 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 21 vs. Canada - 8 p.m. Friday, June 23 vs. Russia - 8 p.m. Medal Round is Saturday, June 24 - check http://www.globalgamesusa.com for a complete information

Should be an interesting game for Spencer. I saw the Puerto Rican team work out Sunday, and they have a few kids who probably are his height, but they are skinny. If he's strong, he should be able to push them around. But those guys are also quick and seemed to handle the ball well, and every one I saw shoot a 3 hit at least one. Overall, the Puerto Rican team looked very athletic.

Good luck tonight, Cameron!

Spencer got to play more minutes yesterday, but didnt score and had just 2 rebounds and the US team was upset by Canada 68-66. Team USA was missing a couple of player, one of which I know is injured. Not sure about the others. Jeremy Mayfield is playing for the US, and he was in foul trouble for much of the game. You may want to see Mayfield play now, because the next time he's in Moody he'll be wearing the opposing teams colors, he's signed to play for UAB. Mayfield is a legit NBA prospect, he'll be a star at UAB for however long they can keep him in school.

Spencer last night played 1 minute but wouldn't have had a boxline except for a Personal Foul. Yep the Speaches are just about done, all the Mustang Clubbers think Doherty is just swell but now comes the hard part-recruiting better players than your opponents with one hand tied behind your back especially in a league like CUSA where schools like UH, Memphis, and UTEP have 3 hands.

Spencer barely saw the court last night. No shots or rebounds, 1 foul. The US team didnt use much of their bench last night, they stuck mostly with the first 7 guys. The needed this win after the upset the night before.

On another note, Bryan Hopkins had 10 points, playing for the exhibition team DFA (Dallas Free Agent) made up of pro players that are hoping for a tryout with the Mavericks. Former TCU player Bingo Merriex is also on that team. DFA lost to the Nigerian team. 96-80.

Thanks for the updates XtC, did you see enough of Spencer to formulate any type of opinions of him?

To be honest, not really. He's big, looks strong, but right now I dont think he's in game day shape. He seems to get tired after a couple trips up and down the court, and he slows down noticeably. Its hard to tell what he might be like when he's got his wind. The one shot he made was a pretty solid dunk, but he bricked his only free throw, doesnt have much touch on his shot. But thats based on seeing him take a total of 3 shots, so who can really say? In all 3 games together he'splayed less than 20 minutes, and its been in spurts of 2-3 minutes at a time, at most. He doesnt stay in long enough to really make any impact. Sorry, but thats all I can really tell you.

Well Stallion knows! He says both Spencer and Doherty suck!

where did I say that? I'm totally on board with Doherty. Just get a little nauseated by the same people wetting their pants for the 10th time every time we get a new coach, expecting a miracle turnaround and then being the first to call for the guy's head when the victim fails-as he is set up to do at SMU. I've never been the one to get on here and call for the firing of any coach. Playing musical chairs with the coaching staff while the program has circled the drain for 20 years pisses me off. Speaking of the Model where's an update on the updated transfer policy the athletic council was supposed to be wrestling with last year? I had hoped that the Spring Signing Class would give us a better practical example of progress on the Model. Certainly, UTEP, UH, and TCU in either or both Football or Basketball have made even more concentrated efforts on transfers while its unclear where SMU is on this issue. Hopefully, that's why Doherty put those two scholarships in his pocket because if we have to wait for freshman to rebuild you better settle in on a nice long wait in Basketball. As for Cameron Spencer-he is the longest of longshots and I seriously doubt he will ever play serious minutes at SMU-but that's really not Doherty's fault.

Stallion, could you elaborate on longest of longshots, and not likely to see any significant time? On what is that based? This is a serious question.

based on the fact that he was rated as something like the No. 103 Player in the State of Texas, he was still availiable when Doherty got the job and he had few good alternative offers. Interest for Spencer was basically from Sunbelt/Southland Conference schools.

For Pony Grad and others on this thread - Some time back in a post by Grider about the commitment by Spencer - he provided a link to some video clips (all or almost all of two games) Click on the following
and judge for yourself what SMU might be getting. Be sure to click on the links for LCM High School (Little Cypress-Mauriceville HS)

Watch those two clips and tell us what you see.

Judge for yourself, hey Falcon, I rely more on all the mid-tier schools that did not even offer him a scholarship.
