Guaranty Basketball Inner-City Youth Program Tourney
Posted: Fri Aug 04, 2006 3:26 pmDALLAS TX -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 04, 2006 -- The 11th annual Guaranty Basketball Association (GBA) will crown its Boys and Girls champions at Davis Athletic Arena on Saturday, August 5. Beginning at 10 a.m., the Boys' League will play two semifinal games, followed by the Girls' and Boys' League championship games. This season, 84 boys and girls teams competed at 15 different sites throughout Dallas in hopes of making it to the championship round.
Following the first Boys' semifinal game, representatives from the sponsoring organizations will present the Eagle Award to one outstanding boy and girl participant who have written essays about GBA and the community service project. The award winners will be chosen based on sportsmanship, positive attitude and commitment to personal growth -- on and off the court, as well as the quality of their essay. Both award winners will receive personal computers donated by Guaranty Bank.

The eight-week long GBA season involves nearly 1,000 inner-city youth between 12 and 14 years of age. This year's program is sponsored by Guaranty Bank, the Dallas Police Department, SMU and the Dallas Park and Recreation Department.
Dallas Police Chief Kunkle will kick off the event with encouraging words to GBA players, volunteers and organizers. "I would like to salute Guaranty Bank for providing such a great outlet for kids during the summer. GBA allows our Dallas youth to get involved in their community and teaches them how to be team players."
Volunteers, primarily from the community, Dallas Park and Recreation Department, SMU, and Guaranty Bank have served as team coaches, and Top Basketball Official Association provided referees during the two month program.
GBA began in 1995 to give kids an alternative to roaming the streets during the summer months. Approximately 8,000 inner-city youth have participated in the GBA games since the program's inception. As a part of GBA's athletic competition and mentoring program, players must complete a community service project.
