Coach Doherty is the FIRST coach in that series?

What kind of odds would Vegas have put on that happening?

We are not there yet, but TT hired a guy for bball that got a lot of press when he first got to Tech. I see us headed in the same direction. When was the last time that we were mentioned in the national press for something positive. I am not sure that this will be a good year as far as wins vs losses. Lets hope that he can keep the Big Mo going until he can get his players on the court.

It's August and I am already excited for bball. Must be the heat.....

Pay attention folks...it took Coach K four years at Duke to build a perennial winning program, basically from scratch. Coach D understands what it takes and its going to be fun when he gets it rolling.

For those too lazy to read it all:
Coach D comments on SMU and how he is going to build things....SMU is defintely not a quick fix place as we all know.

MD: I'm using the Duke model. We're not a quick-fix kind of place; we're not going to load up on transfers or juco players. We want to build a foundation. When Mike Krzyzewski got to Duke, he had one or two recruits his first year. The second year he brought in Johnny Dawkins, Mark Alarie and Dave Henderson, and he played them all early, and they got their butts kicked. The next season Tommy Amaker came in; they still lost, but not as bad. And in the fourth year, everything clicked -- they beat us [North Carolina, where Doherty played] when we were ranked No. 1, and went on to the NCAA tournament. The next year, Duke was in the Elite Eight, and the next, the Final Four. That's the model we're using.

SI: Duke and SMU ... interesting.

MD: It's eerie how similar SMU and Duke are -- and this is coming from a Carolina guy. Moody Coliseum reminds me a lot of Cameron Indoor, and we're really similar in terms of academic profile and alumni base. I tell recruits, we're the Duke of Dallas.

Duke of Dallas is wonderful for Basketball. For football, who is our model?

Privates: USC, Miami, Northwestern, Boston College, Stanford, Notre Dome, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Duke, etc.?

Think metro area college. I'll accept Miami or USC.

I'd say BC, Ga Tech, or NW'ern.

Problem is, all of those have something we don't: BCS conferences, or BCS tie-in (ND).

I really enjoy the bashing of SMU, when compared to Duke at the bottom of the SI page.

However, the article is great.

Granted, we need to start winning to ever become a real "somebody" on the radar of the likes of SI and ESPN, but jeez--I can't remember the last time I saw SMU mentioned in the same sentence as bball on anything but SMUMustangs.com. Do you guys realize what we have in Dougherty? This guy is on fire! If in 4 or 5 years we haven't turned things around on the court, SMU should at least make him head of marketing.

Another brief Doherty mention

http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.as ... 034643.htm

"However, one has to question if a 31-year-old coach has enough experience to battle for recruits and push the right buttons on the bench in the Big 12. Capel will be an excellent coach one day, however, you have to wonder if he will be another Doherty -- a coach thrust into the spotlight (UNC) too soon only to crash and burn before resurfacing elsewhere.

Speaking of Doherty, he was hired at Southern Methodist after one season at Florida Atlantic. Doherty comes to Hilltop with both acclaim and baggage from his time at North Carolina, a rocky tenure that sent Doherty into hiatus.

Remember when Al Gore lost the 2000 Presidential Election, grew a beard and began teaching at Columbia while shuffling around the country in an angry rage about the environment.

Doherty went into such depression, growing a beard and spending his days on the links. While perfecting his golf game, Doherty gained a new perspective on the game he truly loves.

From The End of the Bench believes Doherty will garner recognition at SMU, which will serve as another springboard to where the coach truly belongs -- among the nation's elite."
