Men's Basketball Will Hold Open Tryouts on Sep. 17

SMU Students Can Tryout at Moody Beginning at 4 p.m.

Sept. 11, 2006

DALLAS (SMU) --- The SMU Men's Basketball team will host open tryouts at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sep. 17, in Moody Coliseum. Head coach Matt Doherty and his staff will provide current SMU students a chance to be part of the 2006-07 basketball squad. The tryout will last approximately two hours.

The Mustangs' 2006-07 season begins Nov. 12-14 in Tallahassee, Florida, in a three-day round-robin event where the Mustangs face Illinois State, McNeese State, and host Florida State, respectively. The Mustangs host the Dayton Flyers in the home-opener at Moody Coliseum on Nov. 18. The slate includes a home game against Texas College on Dec. 3, which is the 50th anniversary of the opening of Moody Coliseum when the Mustangs topped McMurry 113-36 on Dec. 3, 1956. The Ponies host Houston Baptist in an exhibition game at Moody on Nov. 4.

another clever marketing move by Coach D, perhaps? Don't the Cameron crazies always stand up and chant for the walkon at the end of the bench to get some garbage time?

Maybe the Duke of Dallas wants another (or maybe its first) 'in' with the student body.

Is it open to undergrads only? Any 6'5 or taller pastors in training over at Perkins?

I'm not much of a basketball guy, but it seems to me this is a smart move. Grab a walk-on or two to fill out the roster, rather than wasting a scholarship on someone who doesn't meet the coach's recruiting standards. This gives the team enough bodies for practice and laugher games, and allows the coach to save scholarships for future recruits.

He's got some room on his roster for some walk-ons. Might as well see if he can find a couple of guys who can drill some threes or play defense.

There should actually be some decent talent added on to the team after the tryouts. Bryan Remphrey, a preferred walk on last year who was dismissed from the team, will be trying out again. Also, there are a few athletic players with decent height and ability that play at Dedman Rec center every day. It should be interesting to see the roster after these tryouts. Hopefully there will be more than one diamond in the rough.
