Staff Update
Sept. 26, 2006
With Mike Garland being formally announced as Associate Head Coach, I would like to update you on the "team" I have put together. I am very excited about the staff we have in place here at SMU.

First of all, Liliana Hemme is my executive assistant. She was with me in Florida and did such a good job that I asked her to join our team here in Dallas. Lil and her family decided to take me up on the offer and move to the great state of Texas. She is a loyal, hard working lady from the island of Malta, which is off the coast of Italy. When you call our office you will get to hear her beautiful accent.

Next up is Lance Irvin. The Chicago native came from the University of Missouri, where he served as an assistant coach. Prior to that he had worked at Iowa State and Texas A&M. Lance has Big 12 experience to go along with tremendous contacts across the country as his family is heavily involved in AAU basketball. His energy and enthusiasm are contagious!

Steve Lutz joined our staff from Stephen F. Austin. The San Antonio native brings a terrific knowledge of the State of Texas. His contacts are a big benefit to our Mustang program. Steve is considered one of the State's top young assistants.

I knew it was important to hire someone with Texas roots, and I couldn't have found anyone better that Steve.

Associate Head Coach Mike Garland just joined the SMU family from Cleveland State where he was the head coach for three years. Prior to that he served as Tom Izzo's top assistant at Michigan State for seven years, helping them to three straight Final Fours and a National Championship! The Michigan native coached 11 NBA players during his time with the Spartans while also developing fantastic contacts nationwide. His experience and leadership add a great deal to our program.

Malcolm Farmer came with me from Florida. I have known Malcolm since he was a freshman manager at Notre Dame in 1999-2000. He is our "General Manager", handling all the operations that go into running a Division I basketball program. I would be lost without him! His work ethic, loyalty and intelligence are unmatched by anyone I have ever come across.

This group is committed to bringing the very best basketball program possible to SMU. I am fortunate to lead this team of talented individuals. I believe our staff stacks up very well with the best in the business. Between us we have six Final Fours, 16 league titles, 12 league tournament crowns, 32 NBA players and two National Championships. Our goal is to win games, but we are also called to develop young men as they prepare for life after basketball. In addition, we want to help raise awareness of SMU on the national level, thus helping all members of the SMU community.

At this time I would like to thank our wives and children for all the love and support you have given us as we chase our goals and dreams of building a championship program at SMU. The sacrifices you all make do not go unnoticed.

Note: Exciting news! We are having a Tip-Off Dinner at 7pm on Wednesday, October 11th at the Radisson Hotel. This will be a great opportunity to welcome home our keynote speaker, Jon Koncak, along with hearing about the upcoming season. For details contact Kristi Kaiser:

This is worth highlighting. Hopefully they act quickly, I can't wait for respectable basketball.
