DMN: Will Chance for Closure Be Opportunity Lost for Doh?

Next Feb. 10 seems to be an opportunity for Matt Doherty to gain closure from his nasty April 2003 split from the University of North Carolina.

On that Saturday afternoon, during a home game against Wake Forest, North Carolina will honor its 1982 national championship team, for which Mr. Doherty started. The problem is that Southern Methodist has a 7 p.m. home game against Rice.

"We'd love to have him," former North Carolina coach Dean Smith says. "He knows that. He's very much part of our program here, but now he has his own at SMU."

Mr. Doherty says he would have liked to attend the ceremony in Chapel Hill. He even talked to Conference USA officials about possibly moving the Rice game to Friday, but details couldn't be worked out.

"I think he's gotten over it to the point where we move on and don't dwell on it," says Mr. Doherty's wife, Kelly, who also attended North Carolina. "But do you ever forget? I don't know if we can."
