"Doherty had the same motto during his stint at FAU, but said he has no plans to leave SMU in similar fashion.

"You never get to finish what you start," Doherty said. "This is a program in a different situation. Having been at North Carolina and Notre Dame, I don't need that again.

"There are a lot more headaches at the next level. If I hadn't seen that before, I'd be anxious, but I'm very comfortable here."

So if he starts taking us to the dance every year, will he have to move to a lower school to avoid "the next level"?

I'm not sure he thought that out when he said it

Do they practice at the Church gym on Hillcrest?

I think he meant being at UNC where if you were not in the final four you were crucifide. And if he got us there a couple of times he would be a golden god and the next coach who followed him would have that pressure to measure up to.

I kind of read it as him saying he was immediately into the pressure cooker at UNC and was not prepared to handle it. Here, he knows what to expect at the next level, but he has the opportunity to work and build up to it and be ready when he reaches it rather than being under the gun from the get go. I am comfortable with the statement.
