Tough win

Postby tristatecoog » Wed Dec 13, 2006 10:28 pm

Before tonight, SMU was ranked #9 in the RPI due to its only loss being at a tough FSU squad. I imagine that Doh got on the team for winning by only 17 pts tonight. Did PVAMU get lucky and/or play real well, or was SMU playing down to the level of competition?

I tried to get over for the game but I'll have to wait for the next one. The team seems really good this year but we need another solid team to play as a measuring stick.

PV A&M is a fast-paced team and they play tough. Some mental mistakes by the Mustangs tonight. Some poor ball handling, too. Also, too many missed free throws. A very physical game tonight. Give credit to the Panthers for playing tough.

ugly. "some" mental mistakes, MM65? try a boatload of mental mistakes and sloppiness. exams might have been a factor, but that was ugly. our vaunted rpi should plummet, otherwise it didnt mean anything to begin with. maybe we can stop hearing about the rpi now, its silly, and will end up coming back to bite the coaches and the team with the typical smu style inflated expectations for this season and post season chances.

no, but it was not an encouraging performance in any way, shape or form. did you think it was? we had a huge size advantage, so the rebounding was dominant, but the offense was not good and the ball handling was flat out bad. defense was ok, PV got a lot of wide open shots though, they just cant shoot. this road trip will tell us something.

No, not an encouraging performance by any strength of the imagination.

In his radio interview after the game, Doh said that he mandated at half that no three attempts in second half wihout going inside first. I believe it was Derrick Roberts who was pulled from the game because he failed to heed this directive. In any event, we took control in the second half with total domination on the boards and at the free throw line. Believe we took only three three point attempts in the half.

They announced on the All Access that Roberts had been pulled and sent to the locker room. I was wondering what happened. I like this action by the Coach. He needs to let them know he is in charge.

Very disappointed in the ball handling. More than once the ball was stolen while just dribbling down the court one on one with no excessive pressure. That indicates a difficult year to me.

I am getting really nervous about the TCU game. Prairie View showed the blueprint tonight on how to really screw us up. Press, trap in the front court, and jump the high screen. We need to execute the roll when they do this but we aren't.

Killen has got to stop dribbling up the sides where the halfcourt trap is waiting and Dez needs to stop dribbling side to side. Teams with a little bit of talent that have fast guards that know how to press and trap are going to make us look silly if we don't make some changes. Conference play could be ugly......

And could our guards please recognize early when our big men have position down low and get them the ball????? We are 2 and 3 counts slow on recognizing when our big men have their guys pinned down low and by the time the guards see it, it's too late................

This was the first game I saw this year. I sure hope the team is better than what I saw last night.

Man I paid a dollar each for two ticket ( plus a $5.00 handeling Fee ) to watch this game.

SLOPPY, slow, looked like the Dement pass it around to outside till your forced to jack up a 3 offense. Well at times it did.

I did see attempts to get the ball into the post. Encouraging given the second half.

Incredible. We totally sucked last year, and we are now 7-1 and beat a team by 17pts and all you guys are [deleted]?

We only led by 5 at one point in the second half. Houston recently beat this team by 50.

This is what I saw last night:

1) Our guard play is going to hold us back in the CUSA tourney.

2) I thought our effort was poor int he first half.

3) Although I thought Doughrety probably got a little too peeved at Roberts, I liked what he did in the second half. He knew there was no way we would lose to that team, so he put us through "real game" situations. He forced the team to run sets, run an offense through the post. He never once called an isolation play to abuse our superior height or athleticism. He made them run plays, eat up clock.

Part of the reason we didn't beat them by more is that he didn't allow the guards to attempt to dribble penetrate, he told the team no threes, and he ran an offense. I guarantee when these guys played Houston, Houston just out-athleted them. But what Daughrety did was much better - he made them basically run an extended practice.

Running plays to eat clock, hold onto the ball, and get the ball into the post instead of playing helter skelter is going to help us big time in that OU game.

It was a very, very ugly game. But I was really impressed with the coaching.

You hit the nail - I was actually irritated at first to see that we were not
going to run - we had several chances for 3 on 1 or 4 on 2 and we didn't press because Doh had told them to run plays and get the ball inside.

Pulling Roberts made a good point for the team but if he had it to do over he would probably have just pulled him and not sent him to the lockers.

Our timing is off by a few ticks but I think we are making progress in
running the offense and Doh is making them run plays and not just running up scores.

Epps is getting better and will help us down the stretch.
