Doherty comments

Postby Pony_Fan » Fri Dec 29, 2006 10:24 am

Doh's comments:

"One of the worst losses I've been a part of," SMU coach Matt Doherty said. "I don't mind losing the ball game, but if we're in a fight, I'd at least like to throw a punch.

"They just are mentally tougher than we are. *sound familiar?* I don't know if we'll get there. This game really exposed that in us unlike any other game we've had this year."

I didn't get a good perspective listening on the radio - mustangbill, thanks for the summary

remember when Dement got in trouble with Papou Copeland because he suggested that SMU needed to recruit tougher kids.

That is exactly the quote I was thinking about Stallion.

never have liked a public flogging of players ... you can communicate this same message in practice and the locker room ... but that's doh's track record ...

Normally, I tend to agree. But I think this situation warranted the scathing remarks. This thing was ugly, the team looked like a deer in headlights, and just was kind of standing around waiting for someone else to provide the spark. I thought his reaction was frank, and an honest assessment of the effort last night.

There was also a nice quote in the paper this morning, not online for whatever reason, to the effect that the reason some players got into early foul trouble was that they did not want to play against OU and would rather sit on the bench with fouls. Sweet.

Its mind-boggling how SMU got ZERO points and ONE rebound in FORTY SEVEN MINUTES from two of its most important big man last night. I mean damn you would think when are 7-0 and 6-8 you should be able to stick your hands straight up in the air and get 5 rebounds in FORTY SEVEN MINUTES. That performance requires modification of the famous Abe Lemons quip that "Son you scored 1 more point than a Dead Man". Something like "Sons if it weren't for that one rebound we might have to check for a pulse". You have got to question the desire and manhood of your players in that situation. What's the old saying "rebounding is 9/10 heart and desire"

I think Doh has outbitched all of us. I am impressed to that effect. If football had layed an egg like bball did last night, you can bet I would've typed and retyped about how pissed I was. And so would've a lot of others. I think Doh's comments had some effect of a countermeasure.

I haven't seen one person ask the rhetorical question, "Say, what was the score of the SMU-OU game last year? Did we lose by less than 27?"

I like coach Doh. However, I think maybe KGB was trying to help him out by writing that his remarks were laced with anger. Never good to talk out of anger. Just like Lee Corso says on the NCAA FB Game when asked what do you say to the QB after throwing another pick: "Nothing. That's a lot better than some things you might want to say."

These boys need to go to Junction before the season to get a little tougher. Ok, how about Mrydels backyard in Sherwood.

...just be careful not to step in anything.

Regarding Doh's comments: good for him. A little public humiliation can be effective. Heck, Bob Knight would have had these guys locked in the arena overnight shooting free throws, running, passing, etc.!

As disappointing and as embarrasing as last night's loss was to the Sooners, I'll be at Saturday night's game against NC A&T at Moody to support the Mustangs. We're bringing two guests with us, too. I encourage everyone to bring a guest or two with them, as well.

Heck, the Mustangs are 9-2...that still ain't bad, folks! GO MUSTANGS!

This is the type of stuff that got him into trouble at UNC. As you said, it works for Knight. I would not want to be the Raiders basketball team today, ouch. Do did say that they would regret their play because he was going after them in practice. I remember I had a tough high school basketball coach, after a loss like that, we had to do yo yos over and over again, and then when we were good and tired, two on two full court and then free throw shooting practice. You did not want to lose.

I don't know why some of the posters on this board are so worried about the player's feelings right now. Maybe I'm not very PC, but they should be embarrassed and I'm glad to know the coach isn't going to take it sitting down. These kids need to understand that this is not intramurals that they are participating in. They have been given full rides to attend this great university...they need to act like they appreciate it. I'm not so stupid as to think that a better effort is all it is going to take to win every game. I can accept a loss when the team has given it their all and the other team is just flat out better. We may have lost last night regardless of what we did, but by 27 points???...that is just sad.

If it looked as bad as it sounded, I have no problem with what Doh said. I also agree with what Stallion said about the rebounding. Ridiculous

With this loss, I figure SMU is well on its way to resorting to tacos and Palmolive in order to cut Doherty loose.
