SMU Looks to Improve on Its 7-1 Home Record This Season

DALLAS (SMU) - After splitting two games on its first Conference USA road trip of the season, the SMU women's basketball team (10-5, 2-1 C-USA) plays its final two home games during the month of January this weekend beginning Friday night with first-place UTEP (14-1, 3-0 C-USA) visiting Moody Coliseum. The game will be broadcast live on KKGM-Radio (1630 AM).
SMU is 7-1 at home this season while, after 10 consecutive home games, the Miners are playing only their third road game of the season.
Scouting UTEP...
In her sixth season as head coach, Keitha Adams returns all five starters from last year's 14-15 team. This season, the Miners are 14-1 with their lone loss taking place on Nov. 26 vs. Arizona. Since then, UTEP has strung together 10 straight wins. As a team, UTEP tops the league in scoring offense, scoring defense, scoring margin, field goal percentage, field goal percentage defense, three-point field goal percentage, blocked shots, assists, and turnover margin. Individually, the Miners are led by freshman guard Jareica Hughes, who earned this week's C-USA Player of the Week honors. She averaged 20 points, 8.3 assists, 5.0 steals and 4.7 rebounds in the team's first three league games.

Friday marks the 20th meeting between SMU and UTEP. SMU holds a significant edge in the series history (15-4). The Mustangs have won three of the last four meetings, including a 59-46 win at Moody Coliseum on Feb. 24, 2006. Janielle Dodds posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. On Jan. 8, 2006 in El Paso, the Mustangs lost to the Miners, 80-69, despite a 25-point, nine-rebound effort by Dodds.

** In the NCAA national statistics dated Jan. 7, SMU is ranked 10th in the nation in free throw percentage, 33rd in field goal percentage defense, 50th in three-point field goal percentage, 66th in scoring margin, and 73rd in scoring offense. Janielle Dodds is 31st in free throw percentage while Sharee Shepherd is 67th in steals per game.
** Freshman post Alice Severin has posted a double-double in two of the last three games. Her most recent double-double (18 points and 11 rebounds at UAB) were career-high marks in both categories for the Lucas, Texas, native.
** Junior guard Katy Cobb needs three more points to eclipse the 600-career point mark. In addition, Cobb needs 23 assists to hit the 200-career assist mark.
