ROBERTS AND OFOEGBU ADDED AS CAPTAINS – JOIN KILLEN AND RACKAUSKAS

DALLAS (SMU) --- SMU men’s basketball coach Matt Doherty named Derrick Roberts and Ike Ofoegbu as team captains. They join Donatas Rackausas and Jon Killen, which have been team captains since before the season.

“Derrick and Ike have developed into outstanding leaders throughout the season,” says Doherty. “We have an terrific group of young men, and the team captains exemplify that.”

On Wednesday, the Mustangs rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit before falling 57-56 to Southern Miss in the Conference USA opener. After intermission, Roberts had five points, four rebounds, and an assist while Ofoegbu had eight points and six boards.

“They displayed outstanding leadership in the rally against Southern Miss,” emphasized Doherty. “They were emotional and physical leaders in the rally.”

Roberts is averaging 9.4 points and 2.4 assists for the season. He has a team-high 27 three-point field goals and is shooting 42.2-percent from long range. On Wednesday, he played 31 minutes with 11 points, five rebounds, and two assists after being a game-time decision due to flu-like symptoms.

Ofoegbu is leading the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game and rebounding at 7.5 boards per outing. He had his fifth double-double of the season on Wednesday.
