ATLANTA -- Four juniors and two seniors might not be the only people two-time defending national champion Florida has to replace next season.

Gators associate head coach Donnie Jones, who has worked under Florida coach Billy Donovan for the last 13 seasons, is one of the top candidates to replace fired Ron Jirsa at Marshall, sources close to the hiring process said Tuesday. Jones, 40, worked as a graduate assistant at Marshall from 1990-92 and was a full-time assistant there from 1992-96.

Jones is expected to be interviewed this week. Marshall officials have interviewed no other candidates since Jirsa was fired last month.

"I think for the right job and the right situation, I'm ready," Jones said. "I've been with Billy for 13 years. I think this is the right situation for me. If not, I'm content where I'm at."

Jones moved into the role of associate head coach after former Gators assistant Anthony Grant was hired as Virginia Commonwealth's coach after the 2005-06 season.

This is the correct order of things. BCS assistants become head coaches at mid-major schools. Mid-major head coaches become head coaches at BCS schools. And so it is written and so it shall be. Except SMU should only take head coaches no matter if they come from BCS or mid-majors.

And fired and disgraced BCS coaches become mid-major coaches to get back up to the BCS leagues some day. The funny thing is for CUSA is that until Louisville, Cincy, DePaul, Marquette and UNCC left it was arguably one of the top basketball conferences in the Country. Now with UH, UTEP, Tulsa, UAB and Memphis in the fold and SMU and USM showing renewed committment to basketball, this is a conference that could get much better very quickly. We need to rise with the tide or be left behind. This is now the time to go nuts out.
