Matt D meet Phil B

PB inherited a team lacking in talent or depth.
PB came to SMU with a reputation as a salesman.
PB’s first real recruiting class was his best, with 10 3-star commits. Rivals ranked it above Michigan State and Clemson. SMU received one of the highest non-BCS rankings.
However, PB was not allowed to make his team immediately competitive by aggressively recruiting JCs , his forte at K-State. Instead, he had to burn redshirts he didn’t want to (Joe Sturdivant was wasted his freshman year) while watching his team suffer through an 0-12 season during his 2nd year at SMU.
PB never recaptured his recruiting momentum, and the rest was history.
Not saying this will occur to Matt D, whom I have a very high regard for, but the similarities are worth noting.
