It all starts with recruiting

The 3 box scores are a reflection of poor, overhyped recruiting.
I mentioned a month ago that Malone would be the primary contributor of this years class. Of course that's playing out to be true. But as a whole the entire class is very weak.
Let's take a look @ what Doh has done.
Year 1- Cameron Spencer- would not start for the 3 small schools that whipped our guys butts. May contribute by the time he's a senior.
Go to any local JUCO game and you will see many PF's much better.
Year 2- Time will tell. Let's give them time. Malone's a keeper.
Jury is out on everyne else.
Year 3- Missed out again on many local & state players. Why no announcement of signings. Based on what you read Otis looks good on paper. But he's a 6'5 undersized forward.
Having played college ball, there is no way SMU should have lost to 3 cupcakes.
Its all a reflection of the recruiting. It doesn't matter if you are a freshman or a senior, if you can play, you can play. An adjustment is needed but not this kind of adjustment. This all points to poor talent.
Again, falling back onto poor recruiting. In addition to that, the team is not fundamentally sound. Great to very good athletes can make up for a lack of fundamentals (see Carl Wright, although a great passer not fundamentally sound) but this team IS NOT as athletic as many have mentioned. Yes, more that other SMU teams but not more athletic than the competition.
Is anyone else excited about the guys mentioned committed to SMU for next year?
Of course if they sign, then next years sophmores will need an adjustment period again & these incoming frosh will need an adjustment just like this years frosh. Wrong !! Its just poor recruiting & poor talent.
I really hope that all the committments change their minds forcing Doh & company to recruit Dallas & Ft. Worth for the remaining unsigned players.
There will be many of them with size & speed that will be just as good as the 3 west coast kids & the Michigan kid. No doubt in my mind.
Whether its Colllin Co. JC's 6"9" freshman or Red Oaks 6'5 SG or one of Kimball or Ft. Worth Dunbars kids they can flat all out play. There's talent everywhere. Just think of all the money they could save on all those wasted flights to Calf & Mich.

Wasn't Cameron Spencer a Tubbs recruit?

Yea, but have you seen the frosh Doh has brought in. Damn, when I seen them being introduced at the football game I was embarrassed for the school. Thank God we have a great academic foundation.

no he was a late Doherty recruit. But to be fair only 1 player in the Texas Top 40 was unsigned when Doherty got his job. SMU should have brought in some JUCOs. We could have started with Nick Stallings the Centenary kid who went 8-8 and won his Conference's Player of the Week award after averaging about 23 ppg in 3 games last week. Another JUCO kid had 15 points and 7 rebs. Seriously, in case some of you didn't notice-THEY ALL SIGN JUCOS these days. This ain't 1960-and the way Adolph Rupp did things. Just about every school at SMU's level signs Transfers-they are everywhere. You especially sign a few JUCOs instead of recruiting a 7 man Freshman Class. This has been going on for years. Supposedly SMU has GREAT freshman who never gel into a championship. Why? Because the teams that beat us congreate about 2/3rds of their players into the Junior and Senior Classes thereby playing more mature and experienced players and building depth. Meanwhile SMU's young players are largely ineffective for their first 2-3 years. I wonder why SMU didn't sign any transfers?

I really don't think SMU would beat 1/2 of the JC's in Texas.
They are all stockpiled with talent. Stallion makes a great point re: transfers.
Also, JC players are used to playing in front of small crowds so it won't be a difficult adjustment for them to play in front of 500 people.

Why are they at JUCO's from the start.
1. Grades not good enough.
2. Problem child and grades not good enough.
Stallion, you no why we can't get juco's in. Why are you jerking these people chain? Plus, if they are that good in JUCO, forget about them coming to SMU.

Its amazing how everyone thinks a kid is @ a JC because of grades.
That is simply not the case.
There are a few extremely talented kids that are top recruits in the country that can't make the grades that go the JC route but the majority of the kids go to class & make good grades.

Spencer is Doherty's recruit. Granted it was the spring, but it was still a very strange signing even for the late period. Ironically, Malone is Tubbs recruit. Thats right, Malone was committed to SMU long before Doherty got hired here. Papa Dias recruiting was also started by Tubbs I hear. makes sense, since he and Bamba are from the same home town in Senegal. Papa is as much Bambas recruit as anybody.
As for the comments about recruiting local, I agree 100%. If you have two kids that are equal prospects, take the local kid. Doherty has obviously shunned Dallas talent just like Shumate did. Doherty doesnt even appear to be trying to recruit anybody locally. Please somebody correct me if i am wrong. I mean serious recruiting of someone in particular.

London Giles(Texas Hoops No. 14) a Kimball Guard committed to Nevada after an "apparent" offer from SMU. Not real sure. David Kyles (Texas Hoops No. 9) also from Kimball signed with Wichita St. but no SMU offer listed. There's a pretty highly recruited kids at God's Academy who said SMU offered named Faisel Aden

Update? We've been out of the picture with Kyles for months.

I don't keep up with it as closely as others. By the way, he signed with Wichita State.

Didn't we recruit that guard from Plano that ended up at Tech pretty hard last year? It is going to be hard to get the top area players until we start winning again and going to the dance. That being said, I would think there are a lot of lesser ranked Texas players out there who could really help us.

you have to sell them something and reach out to the locals immediately when you take over and really emphasize local recruiting. It can be done. Dement did it when he came here. He hired Tubbs as an assistant and before long you had guys like Sasser, Davis, and Ross at SMU. Doherty has made no effort to hire an assistant from one of the area high schools. Doherty seems to be a stubborn guy throughout his track record. Hope that works out for him. And us. It will be too late once you establish a losing atmosphere.
