Women's BB: SMU 71, Coppin St. 68We won our 7th straight but it didn't sound like we played well.
Blew a 16-point lead and actually fell behind by one point a couple of times. Coppin St. missed a 3 that would have sent the game into OT. Think Delisha Wills had a double-double. Now 7-1, we play host to UTA Saturday and then it's finals and then we don't see the team until Jan. 11. They have a 5-game roadtrip. Good luck, ladies!!
According to SMUMustangs.com, Wills didn't have a double-double, but she still led the team in scoring. Dodds is now tied for SECOND PLACE ALL TIME in points in SMU history.
KEEP IT UP, MUSTANGS! Cobb, Wills Lead SMU Women's Basketball To Seventh Straight Win Mustangs turn away Coppin State, 71-68 DALLAS (SMU) - Sophomore forward Delisha Wills scored a team-high 17 points, and senior guard Katy Cobb hit a game-winning three-pointer with 1:33 to go to lift the SMU women's basketball team (7-1) to its seventh consecutive victory, 71-68, over Coppin (Md.) State. The seven-game winning streak is the Ponies' longest since the 2004-05 season, when they reeled off eight straight victories. Coppin State slipped to 4-6. The Mustangs took a 36-27 lead into halftime, but the Eagles shot the ball well in the second half, eventually pulling into a 66-66 tie with 1:47 to go. But on the next possession, the Ponies eluded the swarming CSU defense and reversed the ball back to Cobb, who calmly buried the three-pointer that eventually proved to be the game-winning basket. Wills was one of three Mustangs to score in double figures. Cobb chipped in with a season-high 14 points, while senior guard Sharee Shepherd added 12. Senior All-America candidate Janielle Dodds led the Mustangs on the glass with 11 rebounds, and added nine points. She now has 1,503 points in her career, tying her with former SMU star Kerri Delaney for No. 2 in SMU history. The Mustangs are back in action Saturday when they host Texas-Arlington at 7 p.m. at Moody Coliseum. For a complete schedule and ticket information, log on to SMUMustangs.com or call 214-SMU-GAME. We built a good lead and then put our subs in, and Coppin State came back. We waited too long to put our starters back in, IMO. Rhonda said before the game that she wanted some of the bench players to get some minutes tonight, and I certainly agree with that, in theory. But we waited too long, and let a team we should have put away gain confidence and get back into the game. When the game was on the line, Katie Cobb and Sharee Shepherd both made big plays for us.
Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.
Congratulations to the Ponies. Coach Rompola coached her [deleted] off (did she ever sit down all night?) She's really done that all year, and it's an indication of how good a coach she is. The team really didn't play that well tonight (what was up with Dodds? Seemed pretty quiet tonight.), but they figured out how to win anyway. Coach and her staff have some really talented players to work with this year, obviously, but on a night when their minds seemed to be on finals or social lives or the weather or any of a number of other things, they got another win. SEVEN IN A ROW. Way to go, Mustangs  see you Saturday night!
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
This was a stat I thought was ridiculous: 3-point goals–Coppin St. 3-7 (Oakley 0-1, Suber 2-4, Thompson 1-2), SMU 4-22 (Cobb 1-2, Dodds 0-1, Shepherd 0-5, Samuels 2-7, Gross 1-3, Gilliam 0-1, Hill 0-3)
4 for 22!? Is it usually that high? Sir, shooting-star, sir.
Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.
That was a big part of what let them come back. When we had the lead, we sat at the perimeter trying to hit 3s (with little success, obviously) instead of working the inside, which is where we had the huge advantage.
SMU shoots a lot of 3s - Katie Gross, Jillian Samuels, Katy Cobb, Sharee Shepherd, LaShandra Hill, Brittani Allen (who am I forgetting) can all hit them, and Janielle Dodds has even stepped out and drained a couple this year. Last night was bizarre - one of those nights when the ball just wouldn't go in from outside. There have been a few games when they hit about 50 percent from the line, so the fact that they won on a night when the shots just weren't falling is somewhat encouraging. Hopefully they'll get that straightened out at Saturday's home game (7 PM) against UT-Arlington.
Just for the record, Dodds is tied for second. ![]() Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Did I miss something? What's the difference between what you said and what Hal said. Clearly I need more coffee. See you at Moody tonight - GO FOR EIGHT STRAIGHT!
That makes me feel better. I thought it was just me.
