Cobb, Wills Lead SMU Women's Basketball To Seventh Straight Win
Mustangs turn away Coppin State, 71-68
DALLAS (SMU) - Sophomore forward Delisha Wills scored a team-high 17 points, and senior guard Katy Cobb hit a game-winning three-pointer with 1:33 to go to lift the SMU women's basketball team (7-1) to its seventh consecutive victory, 71-68, over Coppin (Md.) State.
The seven-game winning streak is the Ponies' longest since the 2004-05 season, when they reeled off eight straight victories. Coppin State slipped to 4-6.
The Mustangs took a 36-27 lead into halftime, but the Eagles shot the ball well in the second half, eventually pulling into a 66-66 tie with 1:47 to go. But on the next possession, the Ponies eluded the swarming CSU defense and reversed the ball back to Cobb, who calmly buried the three-pointer that eventually proved to be the game-winning basket.
Wills was one of three Mustangs to score in double figures. Cobb chipped in with a season-high 14 points, while senior guard Sharee Shepherd added 12.
Senior All-America candidate Janielle Dodds led the Mustangs on the glass with 11 rebounds, and added nine points. She now has 1,503 points in her career, tying her with former SMU star Kerri Delaney for No. 2 in SMU history.
The Mustangs are back in action Saturday when they host Texas-Arlington at 7 p.m. at Moody Coliseum. For a complete schedule and ticket information, log on to SMUMustangs.com or call 214-SMU-GAME.
