SMU making the men's NCAA tourney

Postby Hoop Fan » Sun Dec 09, 2007 9:43 pm

No not this year. But the Crum Center completion gets me to thinking what SMU's goals are and how to get there. Gotta be going to our first big dance since 1993 right? Problem is we almost certainly have to target an at large bid. Memphis is so far out in front of the rest of the league and they play the tournament at home, so winning an automatic bid looks like a pipedream for the foreseeable future. At large bids are very tough and tricky to get. Gotta play a great schedule and still win. We will need some good programs to come to Moody to have a chance. What that means is possibly 2 for 1s. Even if its 1 for 1s, we better start planning now and getting these series started NEXT YEAR. If we want to play Notre Dame at Moody in 2009, we better get to South Bend next year. Get A&M on the schedule. Texas too. If Rice can do it, why can't we? Houston plays Arizona in Houston this year too. Somewhat regional and similar schools I would love to see us play:

Texas
Texas A&M
LSU
Notre Dame
Vanderbilt
Illinois
Missouri
Oklahoma
Okie State
Ole Miss
Butler

jsut to name a few. I purposely left out Kansas and North Carolina because they are virtually unbeatable year in and year out. Most of these others can be ripe on a given night or in a given year. Anyway, scheduling for an at large bid is an important long term process that has to start next year I believe. Even if you take some lumps.

How about Arkansas and New Mexico? Although the Lobos are only Mountain West, thay would be a fun team to go home and home with.

Maryland, UVA, Wake Forest, Miami, Florida State, are all ACC schools with good players, but not the titans that UNC and Kansas are. I'd also add in George Washington, St. Josephs, Villanova, St. Johns, DePaul, as teams that are upper higher strata teams that are beatable by a very good team.
