I love how realistic he is... He knows the team isn't good yet and is trying to improve...We can't ask for a better basketball coach. The blog is great...

Toughness again.

Anybody remember when Dement was chastised by Copeland for saying he needed tougher players?

Even though I am not happy about losing to Southern, Alabama State, and South Carolina - Upstate I am very pleased with Coach Doherty. His blog is great, even after embarrassing losses like the ones we have had this year he is a man and faces the fans. He communicates his displeasure, openly states that SMU was outhustled and reassures us that SMU will get better. Outside of wins, there is nothing else you can ask of him at this point. He really gets it!

I know this year hasn't been as great as some people were expecting. I would have liked to see a better start myself, but I knew it was going to be a rough year. I like that Doh has ended his last two blogs with this.

Maybe we need to take the players to the batting cages. They can stand in front of the fast pitch and let the ball hit them in the chest. By next year, we'll be that much tougher for hoc---, i mean, basketball season.

If you want them tough have them stand on a 24" stool.

How about just recruiting better players. Or, how bout recruiting tougher players.

I am very disappointed with 4 of the 7 recruits.
Obviously you are going to miss on some but I don't like what I see.

This toughness thing is crap. Better players eliminate excuses.

Also, play some real teams. Scheduling cup cakes & getting beat by them leads to getting fired.
Give these guys a taste of the big time. Schedule the big boys for road games. Helps recruiting too. Players want to go play against Kansas, UCLA. They don't want to play Upstate Carolina or Paul Quinn.

Any coach can blog.

Doh seems like a nice guy.

Coach Doh could bring Schellas to help train in toughness. I don't know if the link still works...the site has been blocked at work.

You can have great players. However, jokes aside, I consider the "toughness" Doh talks about being a mental thing. With 7 freshman, it will take some time to develop.

The atmosphere I'm talking about playing in helps create mental toughness & confidence.

Its one thing to play in front of 10,000 fans.
Its a depressing thing to play Upstate Carolina in front of 1500.

I guarantee you the players would much rather get beat playing @ UCLA than playing Paul Quinn.

This schedule just sucks. I hope next years has major improvements.

I think the schedule will depend on how they negotiate the rest of the season and if he thinks they will be mature enough to handle it.

Mrydel said it earlier this week. We breezed through last year's schedule and then fell apart in conference play.

The OOC is really dictated if a young group is mature enough to handle everything and can respond. Judging by what we're seeing now, they would not respond well with a challenging schedule.

And how depressing would it be to play in front of 10,000, get your [deleted] handed to you, then come home to a crowd of 1,500.

I would rather play the cup cake schedule with my group of freshmen, let them get use to the college game speed, let them get use to each other, then when they have matured and are Juniors and Seniors, put them to the test.

It would be extremely nice to have a few more juniors and a few sophomores, but that is not what we have.

What a Great Top 25 Recruiting Class this is. PONY UP! Watch a Top 25 Recruiting Class in Action!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hurry get your tickets at Ticketmaster!!!!!!!!(guess some of you actually brought the BS floated around the SIDs office). The class is what it is. A foundation of some quality freshman who should improve considerably in coming years. That's it. Its not on par with the kids Baylor, or UT or A&M or Oklahoma St have brought in during recent years. BTW what's Baylor's record this year? How did they do when they were freshman? Sophmores?
