Other nice numbers

We had good point distribution throughout the tournament, and in the championship game. In the finals:
Brittany Gilliam, 20 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals
Sharee Shepherd, 17 points, 4 assists, 4 steals. Sharee now has 98 steals for the season, passing Wendy Trusky and setting a new single season record. She was also named to the C-USA All-tournament team.
Katy Cobb, 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals, off the bench. and some serious tough defense on Jerieca Hughes.
Janielle Dodds, 10 points and 11 rebounds. Named the tournament MVP. Janielle now has now started 122 career games, another school record. Janielle also holds the career free throw record with 475 made. I'm not sure about free throw attempts, but she may have that as well.

Janielle already holds the womens records for points (1846) and rebounds (969). She wont catch the mens records held by Jeryl Sasser and Jon Koncak, but she does have more points than Koncak, and more rebounds than Sasser.

Jillian Samuels has 68 3-point shots for the season, tied for the team record with Andrea Cossey. Her next made 3 will set a new season record.

SMU got 16 points from their bench, compared to 0 for the Miners. UTEP also got 0 points from starting guard Kasia Krezel, and just 2 points from starting forward Timika Williams. Piekarska, Hughes and Lacy scored the other 55.

24 wins on the season is a new record.

Forgot one. The SMU defense committed 41 steals and forced 62 turnovers in 3 tournament games, scoring 69 points off turnovers in the tourney.

One more I forgot. UTEP had the nations longest active winning streak at 23 games. Over and done, now.

After the win over UTEP, our RPI is up to 45. Now that we have the automatic bid, it doesnt matter as much, but 45 probably would have been good enough to get us in the tourney. It's still helpful for getting a decent seeding.

The steals are fast breaks really stand out in my mind from the tourney. (IMHO) It's pretty mentally devastating to have the ball ripped form your hands, especially when you can capitalize. There were a few points in the secon half were points just weren't being scored by either team, for a minute or two at a time.

Dodd's comment in the Morning News about how fired up the team was for the tourney and that was something lacking during the season left one scratching their head.

To that point, for the entire tournament UTEP only used 4 bench players, for a total of 101 minutes, and they scored 14 points. This team has no depth and when you have to play 3 games in 3 days it will kill you. Our ability to bring players like Katie Cobb, Elbie Gates, and the rest off of our bench is a big plus.

In the El Paso paper article, the UTEP bench did not attempt a FG in the game.
