Men's basketball signee Jarred DuBois, a 6-3, 170-pound guard from Westchester High in Los Angeles, has asked to be released from the national letter of intent he signed with SMU in November.

His father, Gary DuBois, wrote in an e-mail that the request is due to personal reasons. SMU confirmed that the request has been made. Coach Matt Doherty has not decided on a course of action.

SMU recently added Paul McCoy, ranked by Scout.com as a top-10 point guard, and Derek Williams, a junior college point guard, to its signing class.

Let Doh make the call. If he just developed cold feet or felt neglected during the last 60 days, let Doh try to work it out. Especially if he simply wants attend a lesser school or program.

If he has a strong program in mind, well there is nothing to do but release him on good terms--but, thoroughly investigate the posibility of tampering by the stronger program and turn them all into to the NCAA.

Doh is so aggressive on the trail, I wouldn't ever contemplate of turning anyone in for tampering. We have skeletons too. As for Dubois, I hope this kid sticks. I'm not convinced Mccoy is actually better then Dubois, although that's more like an educated guess then tons of firsthand experience

You are probably right, but not often do we get one picked off, after an LOI is signed. You would think that the recruiting stops at that point.

Doh and the athletic dept need to stand firm on this and hold the kid to his LOI. Michael Beasley wanted out of his LOI after Huggins bolted for WVU but KSU held him to it.

These are young adults now that need to learn to stick with their decisions. they must be accountable since HS is over

A coach can place restrictions on where a player can go upon his release. For example they could keep him from going to a C-USA school or any school in Texas. I hope the kid comes but if not I wish him well. We'll have to see where he ends up before we can judge him. If he doesn't want to come here then we shouldn't force him; no good will come of it.

As I mentioned on the thread in recruiting, I'm sure Doherty is doing some hard thinking out of this. Of course, he can't accept "personal reasons" as a motive to grant the release. He'll have to do some digging and get some acceptable answers before he makes a move.

Doherty has access to more information than what the public has access to. You can be sure that Doh knows more about the situation than "personal reasons."

My concern if we lose Dubois is this....

We will then only have 4 scholarship guards- Williams, McCoy, Walker, Harp from what I can tell. That is unless the Haynes to prep school rumors are not true. Supposedly Bennie is gone which would leave Alex Malone as the next most backcourt-like player and he is no backcourt player. I think you have to have 5 scholarship guards to have success unless you have the remarkable luck of perfect health for all 4 guards.
