What now for Quinton Ross?

Postby SMUFan » Thu Jul 03, 2008 12:24 am

Clippers broke the bank for Baron Davis, and they have considerable money invested in Chris Kaman. Now they have to decide how much (if anything) to offer to Elton Brand and Corey Maggette. Common thinking seems to be that they could afford one forward, but not both ... and little else.

Will notoriously-cheap Donald Sterling have enough to sign The Q?

Supposedly Washington, Cleveland, Phoenix and New Orleans are among the teams that like The Q ... and with good reason, of course.

Ross would be an asset for the Mavs. Unfortunately, the Mavs could only offer him the veterans' exception at this point, some $1M+ per year. He is worth more than that.

I was under the impression that in order to sign Davis, they were going to have to renounce their rights to Maggette. At least that's what most articles have indicated. Of course, now it's gotten interesting with Golden State having offered Brand a 6 yr/$90 mil contract. In the end, I think he'll stay there because he wants to win and swapping places won't really help him out...especially since most of that Warriors team will probably sign elsewhere.

I think you're right that the Clips will have to get rid of Maggette or Brand, and the rumor was that Brand opted out with every intention of re-signing with them, in part because he owns a movie production company (maybe he and Baron Davis could go into business together?)

Not sure where, but I read someplace that someone thinks Q will get a contract for something like $3 or $4 million per year. Hope they're right.

Well, we know New York is out, because the Knicks are a bazillion dollars over the salary cap, and new coach Mike D'Antoni doesn't allow anyone to play defense .... which probably rules Washington out, too. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see Toronto make a play for him. By adding Jermaine O'Neal, they sent a signal that they are making a run now, and having a versatile defensive guard could be vital in the East. He won't do anything against LeBron, but nobody does. But he can run all day and has the length to control the likes of Rip Hamilton or Paul Pierce or Michael Redd — won't stop them entirely, of course, but he can keep them in check, and if O'Neal and Bargnani and Bosh (try defending THAT front line!) can handle the scoring, Toronto could be pretty stout.

For the love of god, no. I absoutely dispise the Celtics, and would hate to see The Q up there.

My no-go list for The Q:
Boston
New Jersey
New York
Chicago
Houston
Memphis

After that, I'm pretty indifferent. He's my favorite NBA player, and I'll root for him no matter where he ends up.

from NBAdraft.net

8. (tie) Mickael Pietrus, Quinton Ross: They’re young (Pietrus is 26, Ross, 27), athletic and terrific defenders, but neither guy could find his way off the bench. While it would be foolish to expect either Pietrus or Ross to shoulder the scoring burden, both men could develop into lock-down perimeter defenders in the right situation. Both men have heard the Bruce Bowen comparisons, so teams with weak perimeter defenders (Denver, Phoenix, etc.) might hold parts of their mid-level exceptions for Pietrus or Ross.

Couldn't find his way off the bench?

The Q played in 76 games, starting 44.

The Nets are still in the picture. "Sounds like the Nets are waiting to see what Bostjan Nachbar and Nenad Krstic can fetch on the open market (and they can match Krstic). All the usual suspects remain on their radar: Roger Mason, Quinton Ross, etc." http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/nets/

The Spurs are interested in Q... He would be a perfect fit for them because he is a solid defender which is the first thing they look for when signing new players.
