Students: You are the Key

Nov. 17, 2008

When you think of college basketball, you think of the student body going crazy in the stands. The students are what make college basketball special because without them we might as well be professional basketball! People watch college basketball and attend college games as much to witness the nutty student section as they do to watch the game itself!

SMU Basketball is striving to be a Top-25 program and catch up with the rest of this top-notch university. To get there, we NEED our student section to be Top-25!

Don't wait!

Why turn out for games?

1. You can make a difference! How many times in your life can you make a difference? If you come out in force we will perform better....we will win more....we will get more exposure....your university will get more exposure....the intrinsic value of your degree will go up....you will have more pride in your school...where would Duke be without basketball? Just another good school? The Student Body makes up the Cameron Crazies!

2. Recruiting - recruits want to play in front of crazy students. The better we recruit the more we win.....the more exposure we get....the more exposure our university gets...you know the drill.

3. Fun - come out in force and you will have a blast....creating memories that may last a lifetime!

Moody Coliseum is a GREAT place to see college basketball...small and intimate.....and loud!

Show up in force and together we can help put SMU on the national map!!

How cool would it be to see SMU on the front page of the Dallas Morning News and USA Today in addition to the SMU Daily Campus?

It can happen....it will happen...with your help!

Thanks for reading.

Pony Up!

Coach Doh

So students will turn out in large numbers if SMU is playing top 50 programs?

Too bad JJ can't work to change the culture of the students as directly as the football team. It's sad this type of thing has to even be said. :?

These new coaches must realize that SMU has made little to no commitment to winning before they arrived. SMU imposed stringent academic requirements on athletes, refused to accept juco and other Div. 1-A credit hours, did not recruit and hire the best available coaches, continually made promises about competing and winning without results, refusing to implement an education / coaching / teaching department which interest many student-atheletes, and made decisions to isolate it from many of the local / area schools (burgers and cheer). Can you really blame the students and alumni for being feed up with SMU athletics? I am encouraged by the basketball and football hires. We finally have hired proven winning Div. 1-A coaches with name recognition. I am still not convinced though that the coaches are still on a level playing field with recruiting. I still want to see more transfers and Juco players added to the football and basketball rosters so we do not have to keep playing freshmen every year. Hopefully, the player retention in both sports will improve with proven coaches and a so-called new commitment to winning.

Maybe instead of that stomach turning rendition of Don't Stop Bo-Levi-n!!! We should just make HELP! our theme song. Honest and to the Point

HELP!
By the Beatles (ask your Mom)*

Help! I need somebody
Help! Not just anybody
Help! You know I need someone, help!

When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self-assured
Now I find I've changed my mind, I've opened up the door

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please, help me?

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways
[ Find more Lyrics at www.mp3lyrics.org/tm ]
My independence seems to vanish in the haze
But every now and then I feel so insecure
I know that I just need you like I've never done before

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please, help me?

When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self-assured
Now I find I've changed my mind, I've opened up the door

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please, help me?
Help me! Help me! Oh

Point well made, PK.

Look this is a heartfelt appeal from Coach Doherty to get students out to the game. I like it.

This one quote, a joke or not, is the main problem with SMU Athletics. You go to games to watch SMU play, not the other team. If you look on our season tickets (if you actually buy them), you will see the Memphis game from last year. The stadium is full and the energy was great. Why can't you come out and support when we play lesser schools? I'm pretty sure just as many people go to Duke games against "insert uknown school here" than they do to any other ACC game. Coach D is right, the more fans and students we get the better our chances are in wins, recruits, national attention, etc.

Let the casual fan decide to go because of name, the SMU fan should go to see THEIR team play.

PS - Anyone ever imagined if 1/4 of our football fans came to basketball games. What an easy sell for Coach D and his staff? People who don't show up are part of the problem. Those people have no right to complain when we are not getting the guys we want.

I get what you are saying here, but Memphis was either 1 or 2 when they came in here last year. They also brought quite a few fans with them as well...

...as a bunch of "basketball" fans who came to see a team ranked that high...as well as bandwagon fans...and then the rest were SMU fans.

(didn't the Ponies hang with them for about 2 quarters?)

UTEP will do the same thing. They always seem to have followers in both basketball and football.

Moody is a great place to watch a game. If and when it ever starts to sell out, or at least fill up, it is going to be loud and difficult for the opponet to win there.

i've attended many games during my four years, more than the usual smu student. it's my senior year and i simply have no desire to see our team, which i support, to compete against teams like houston baptist. i've seen games like this before against awful programs and even though we look good, we wont do anything special in conference.

if we would have beaten south florida on the road by a good number of points, my view would be different. otherwise, IMO it appears to be another underachieving bball team who cant shoot the ball like a normal division 1 collegiate team. we also probably dont stand a chance to be competitive on the road at all. i'll get heat for this post, i dont care. this is smu bball at the moment

there is no way this team was coming out of the shoot on fire. New PG, new SG, missing Faye until second semester on the road. I'll admit that the upperclassman and experienced players were disappointing in the opener but its too early to tell what this team will become. I'm more interested to see how this team looks in December.
