SMU basketball: Players will give Doherty a new hairdo

SMU men's basketball coach Matt Doherty will follow through on a promise he made to his team regarding the Mustangs' trip to Africa this summer.

If junior forward Muhammad Faye, senior center Bamba Fall and sophomore guard Alex Malone earned a "B" or better in the African studies course, which was held in conjunction with SMU's summer trip to Senegal and South Africa, Doherty agreed to a haircut.

Well, the grades are in and much of Doherty's hair will be outta here. The Mustangs will use No. 2 clippers to cut his hair.

I guess Doherty won't be mistaken for Memphis' John Calipari in any "best hair "contest...

I'm sure a photo will be posted here.

Of course, I also expect to see his new 'do at the games this weekend.

I've heard stories in the past about how Coach D can be intimidating, but I think something like this can be really good, allowing his players to have the upper hand once in a while. Very cool of Coach to live up to his end of the bargain.

Good luck this weekend, Mustangs!

For those who missed it, it was great seeing Alex, Mo Faye and Bamba shave off Coach Doh's hair. I'd have to say the only drawback was that there was gray hair EVERYWHERE due to the wind. A pretty good turnout, hopefully it will get people riled up about this weekend.

Doherty is doing everything HE can to promote this program and encourage the students to come out and support the team. We can only hope the rest of our current students and alumni will take more interest in SMU athletics. I know the folks on this board are doing what we can.

Doherty has great facilitites to show recruits. With Memphis' near championship he's got a conference to sell. Great city, great school/campus. Only thing missing is a rabid fan base that will show the players sokme love. Let's hope we see a significant increase in home attendance compared to last year

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Good for him. I appreciate everything Doh is doing to try to inject spirit and enthusiasm into the basketball program and the overall sports atmosphere here. It's great seeing him (and some of the bball players) at football games. My gosh the guy is trying to make something special here.

Of course, winning would solve a lot of problems....
