DALLAS (SMU) - Three players scored in double figures, and sophomore LaShandra Hill scored with 21 seconds remaining to tie the score, but a last-second jump shot from the corner gave North Carolina-Charlotte a hard-fought 76-74 victory over SMU in the championship game of the SMU Hoops for the Cure Tournament.
Forward Delisha Wills led the Mustangs with 18 points, and guards Jillian Samuels and Brittany Gilliam added 16 and 10 points, respectively, but UNC-C's Ashley Spriggs, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, buried her 15-footer with less than a second on the clock.
The game was as close as the final score indicates: UNC-C managed to hold a 30-26 edge on points in the paint, while the teams each had 13 points off turnovers. The game was tied 12 times, and there were 23 lead changes.
The Mustangs return to Moody Coliseum when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
