WBB Loses Close One to UNC-Charlotte

Postby MrMustang1965 » Sun Nov 30, 2008 12:48 am

from www.smumustangs.com:

DALLAS (SMU) - Three players scored in double figures, and sophomore LaShandra Hill scored with 21 seconds remaining to tie the score, but a last-second jump shot from the corner gave North Carolina-Charlotte a hard-fought 76-74 victory over SMU in the championship game of the SMU Hoops for the Cure Tournament.

Forward Delisha Wills led the Mustangs with 18 points, and guards Jillian Samuels and Brittany Gilliam added 16 and 10 points, respectively, but UNC-C's Ashley Spriggs, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, buried her 15-footer with less than a second on the clock.

The game was as close as the final score indicates: UNC-C managed to hold a 30-26 edge on points in the paint, while the teams each had 13 points off turnovers. The game was tied 12 times, and there were 23 lead changes.

The Mustangs return to Moody Coliseum when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

Fantastic game - back and forth all day long. UNCC was a much better team than I thought they'd be (I was told Fresno State would be the class of the tournament coming in). We played SO MUCH better than we did against UTA (obviously) and even than we did against Sam Houston State, who we killed. This team will continue to battle inconsistency, but you can see the light coming on for some of the young players. Losses suck, but this was very encouraging.

Couldn't agree with you more.

When Christine Elliott gets more consistent, Delisha Wills is going to have a lot more room to operate. She's already leading us in scoring and close to the lead in rebounds - she'll get better and better as Elliott improves and starts to dominate in the paint.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
