W/BASKETBALLwomen are up 37-22 at the half over the mean green...
Good win - good showing by the team. They had long spurts of excellent defensive play and they got some nice pushes down the court for easy buckets. Total team effort - I thought the Freshmen came off the bench to give the team some nice minutes. Nice to have Elbie back too. The team is improving - that's promising. Nice to see the men's team in attendance for the first half - inlcuding Coach Doh. Also nice to see several WBB alumni in the stands - Kendall Shead, Sarah Davis, Janielle Dodds, Katie Gross, Katie Remke, D-dra Rucker - even saw ex-player Leah Starr at the game.
Good luck against Dartmouth! FYI - ex-player Mary Gleason is an assistant at Dartmouth.
My thoughts from the game:
- LaShandra Hill might have had her best game as a Mustang. Her speed adds an element the team has been sorely lacking since the departure of Katy Cobb, and she looks like she is starting to harness that speed. She is very smooth with the ball, and her ball-handling and quickness makes her able to break the press sometimes by herself. If she becomes a more consistent outside shooter, she'll be a nice weapon to have. - Delisha Wills looked a little like the Wills of last season. Very fast and strong, and more aggressive today going to the basket - hence the 10 free throws. When she plays like that, she's tough to handle. - Haley Day needs to shoot more. She has terrific shooting mechanics, and has shot well in the early part of the season. Seemed a little hesitant today. - Nice to see Elbie Gates back in action. She's a little undersized to play in the paint, but she's a smart player who can score. - Christine Elliott must be the nicest person alive. She should be killing people inside. UNT had one player who matched up with her in terms of height, and Elliott is a lot stronger, and should be more dominant. Maybe a teammate needs to call her out or kick her in the knee or call her names before the game to get her angry, because when she's aggressive, she's unstoppable. - Brittany Gilliam and Jillian Samuels were pretty quiet today. Hope they reverse that Tuesday against Dartmouth. - Morgan Shell was a nice surprise. She didn't play a lot, but scored the minute she got on the floor, and chipped in with six points, I think, including a sweet reverse layup as the shot clock was winding down. If she plays like that, she's going to force her way on to the floor more often. If nothing else, she has to give the coaches a little more confidence knowing she's waiting on the bench of someone else falters. Nice win, Ponies! Way to beat down North Texas State Vocational School. BEAT DARTMOUTH!
