SMU hoops...its not all doom and gloom

Its been a while since Ive been here (since back in the mustangmaniacs.com days)...so be gentle on the loss of my re-virginity.
Ive long been the biggest SMU bball pessimist...and I can honestly say this team isnt as bad as its record. Losses to some of these schools are sacrilegious, but the Ponies are young. Thats no excuse...but some lessons can only be learned in losses. (insert joke here)
I will say this...Coach D has done more to build a PROGRAM than any coach since Bliss. Yes he has more resources...but he also has a good plan. He puts in OT trying to build a fan base out of the apathy that is SMU (Dallas) fans and sports. I take my hat off to the guy...Ive heard more random convos on the streets about Doherty and SMU hoops than I ever have...and thats a good thing.
This team lacks two things...Leadership and Toughness. Cant coach those. Easily the most talented team Ive seen since the Q Ross days. When you pray for patience...you arent blessed w/patience...you are given situations in which you practice patience. Same w/Leadership and toughness. Itll come...
Merry Christmas!

I dont know about great...but thats what they call me!
Yeah...Ive only been to 2 games so far...so i dont have a lot of "game" experience under my belt w/this team. But we worked with some of these guys this summer and skill/ability is not the big issue. Thats fair about Doh and the gameday experience though. Just like Bamba's play has to answer questions about his toughness...coach's decisions has to answer those questions about him.
I wish Dia wouldve sat this one out though. His back has got to be bothering him. A redshirt wouldve been good if possible. Jabari Hearn herniated his disc back in the day and he could barely walk...much less compete at a high level.

kind of strange remembering that we actually had someone from Grand Prairie on our team. I'm used to seeing such players toil for the opposition, going for 20 against us, with their family cheering them on, and us wondering why the hell we couldn't have gotten them.
Who recruited you, Erion? Shumate?

Thanks Corso!
And yes...I was a Shumate recruit. Im reminded of a quote from The Matrix, "the true test of any choice is would you make the same choice again knowing full well what it will cost."
;o)
Tim Mason and I have our own bball training biz and we are also co-directors of the Heroes Bball Foundation founded by SMU alum Charlie McKinney. We are helping develop some studs...and we hope to get a lot more of this homegrown talent to stay home!

Welcome to the board again. It is always great to have people like yourself here. I just hope that we see some real game in this team sometime soon.

The good news is we will have some continuity to the schedule starting on Monday with 6 of the next 8 games @ home so the players should be able to get into a good rhythm.
Let me remind everyone that Tulsa was 1-5 in conference play last year, went to 2-6 & went on to have an very good season.
Players should be jacked about the upcoming home games.
Great chance to string together some nice W's & turn things around.
