have we ever finished last in C-USA?

Postby LA_Mustang » Sun Feb 08, 2009 2:47 pm

we are alone in the cellar at 1-7 and looking at our remaining schedule: Houston twice, at Mem, UAB and UTEP...home games: Tulsa, Rice and So Miss - we probably will not be favored in any. Rice may be our best chance at another win. Assuming we win only one more, we would finish 8-21 and 2-14 in conference - which is a down year for C-USA. Not good at all.

Those close conference losses have really hurt, we havent been able to pull any of them out, even though we were competitive. This is a team with with mostly freshman and sophmores contributing and I still say things will be looking up.

We should be favored against Rice and Southern Miss and can hopefully pull one upset to climb us out of the cellar.

Why are we favored against Southern Miss?

Well, obviously we will have to wait until March 4th rolls around and a lot can happen...I am just going by their conference record of 3-5 and will figure that they will still have a losing conference record when they come to Moody. We should have at least one more conference win and the lines makers seem to really favor the home teams in these types of matchups.

I see it being a tossup at worst and my best guess is that we will be 1-2 point favorites at home against a non dominant team.

Southern Miss is 180 points ahead of us in the RPI (279-99=180), and 111 points ahead in Sagarin (234-103=111).

They have a winning record overall, victories over Houston and Ole Miss, and a better record in conference than SMU. Before they play SMU, USM plays at Rice, and has home games with Tulane and East Carolina, so they have a good shot at at least a few more wins in conference before coming to Dallas. Since Rice is SMU's only legitimate shot at a win, USM would still have a better record than SMU, even if they dont win another game between now and then.

When you mention things like "losing conference record" and "non-dominant team", check the conference standings and start with the team that's dead last. That's where you're going to find a "non-dominant" team.

I dont mean to be rude, but I really dont see anything that would indicate we should be favored over Southern Miss. Last place teams arent favored over middle of the pack teams, not even at home. Southern Miss has completely outperformed SMU. Alot would have to change between now and then for SMU to be the favorite.

OK, we shall see, you are probably right. If the game was tonight, USM would probably be a 2-3 point favorite, still close to a tossup. I guess I am still holding out hope we are going to pull off a big upset somewhere that will really shoot us up.

I respectully concede the argument and agree that if SMU is favored on March 4th, it is because some unforseen and unpredictable things have happened between then and now.

Rice beat Southern Miss tonight 88-72 & now has 3 conference wins.

The answer to your question is..... this year.

Bagice, u are a piece of work.
If u could only take off your blue & red glasses for a minute & quit being head cheerleader for all this crap we are watching called basketball.
Are you Mrs. Doherty?

Heh, I am by far a cheerleader, I am as critical as the next guy and am certainly not happy with how things are.

I was actually joking about getting taken to task about saying that we would be favored over USM, which I still think we might be......but it was a joke about some unforseen things needing to happen, guess it was too subtle and not funny, my bad....

Check my posts, I am far from a cheerleader, I just think Doherty is being blamed for a lot of things unfairly.

The team is young, they suck, I think they can get better.

I'm telling you Doh has lost this team.
Look @ his track record. Its happened again.

The only way this team improves is with a different HC.

You may be right, I hope you are wrong and I will disagree but I understand where you are coming from.

We just can't fire coaches at the drop of the hat, who would we get? Who would come here after we have had 3 coaches in 5 years?

I love SMU basketball and no one is more frustrated than me on how bad we have been over the years. I just don't think changing coaches is the answer here. Give Doherty his 5 years, see if he can deliver.

Message boards are fun for all of us armchair quarterbacks and I really enjoy stating and hearing opinions, but when it comes down to it, few to none of us are D1 coaches or athletic directors or board trustees, they are ones that have to get the job done and set a plan in place.

3 years is plenty & its not @ the drop of a hat.
If the program was showing any signs of improvement than I wouldn't say a thing about Doh needing to go.
I like Coach Doh but he is not a good basketball coach IMO.
I've seen enough.

We signed him to a 5 year deal late in the game. He inherits a terrible team in total turmoil and does not even really have a chance to recruit this first year. And I think he does a great job in developing Ike and Killen, two players who never even saw the court under the old regimes...

I think the team is behind what he is doing and he has not lost them, they are just young. Of course I wish things were progressing faster, but I don't see any reason not to give him two more years and then make the judgement. Especially with the fund raising, infrastructure improvements, and some level of excitement that he has generated.
