Somebody explain to meWhy Doh deserves another year of coaching this team?
Its obvious he can't coach. We are fundamentally weak in every phase of the game. These are his recruits right? We are the doormat of a very weak conference. I seriously didn't think this program could be in any worse shape when Doh took over but guess what, it is! Somehow he has managed to take us from a bad team to a terrible team. Doh must go! "We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
where is the dead horse emoticon?
You know the reasons why, they've been illustrated 100 times “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
No, I really don't understand how he keeps his job. This is really bad basketball we are watching. We are bad in ALL phases of the game. "We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
Re: Somebody explain to me
Unfortunately I can't argue with that. We are going in reverse.
Doherty is not going anywhere, I really feel he will get his 5 years. Passionate fans can find many things to criticize but I will not go so far as to say he cannot coach, I really think he can, he just has a very young team and really only has 2 years of recruiting under his belt. This team will get better.
We also need to give props to our defense and rebounding, but no one is talking about that. There have been enough games where this is not a fluke, this is an excellent scoring defense and rebounding team, we have given many teams their low point totals of the season, We held Houston under 70 who had just torched UCF for 97. This was a total tear down job and I think Doherty is still the right man, he has a reputation and nationally recognized name and, quite frankly, many of the wealthy supporters of SMU really like him as the face of SMU basketball, so he is going to stay. I think in two years we will be a very good team. Womack + Wishbone = Heisman
Class of 89
Well, like it or not, Doherty is coming back next year. But the message will be sent that there better be some dramatic improvement or that's it.
That's why I think he's going on the JUCO recruiting trail. Clear the dead weight with Malone and Kwiatkowski. When you are the worst turnover team in CUSA and the lowest assist team in CUSA, you get what you deserve. Papa Dia -- the ceiling is high for an interesting player. The work ethic and mental toughness completely negate it. I'm tired of his BS. I saw enough of his crap at TCU. And yes, toot my own horn, I haven't been wrong about this team since this game. And for that, I'm really ticked off that this came to fruition. I just hope everybody comes back from the roadtrip to UAB and Memphis alive.
His leash is looong. He's not going anywhere until these frosh are juniors, I'd imagine. He needs more talent and less roster turnover, that simple. Time for some W's staring next year, no doubt. That said, anyone bucking for his dismissal now, just doesn't know how this stuff works, the politics, buyouts in this economy, being overextended on a revenue not earning its keep etc.

In the real business world if someone performed like this over 3 years they wouldn't have that same job anymore. They would be working somewhere else. Sometimes the worst thing you can do is hang on to a non productive employee to long, creating even more long term damage. Good thing for Doh that SMU doesn't give a rat's [deleted] about really being a top 25 team or he would already be gone. Coaches get fired in the middle of their contracts all the time. What's the big deal here? What makes this any different. Nobody understands that more than the HC. Its business. Too bad Orsini won't man up to his mistake & cut his losses before things get even worse (if that's possible). Its very easy to see why UNC ran him off. "We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
Doh comes back and likely finishes his contract because there is a lack of money avaialble to buy him out and pay real money to get a coach for the so-called "Top 25" goal. The "Top 25" statement has really hurt Orsini's credibility. He said it so we all should hold him to it. There is little to no local interest in SMU basketball and it is a shame. This program has done nothing since Dement was fired and a good argument exists that the program has gotten worse.
This team has hit rock bottom & there is no identity. Doh doesn't sell anymore & nobody on campus or in the metroplex can relate to Bamba Fall as your top attraction. "We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors."
No it hasn't. The lack of winning to this point by our revenue sports has hurt him. Football will happen. JJ will win. Everything he's done in the past -- and really every trend right now backs that up. I think bagice's read on Doh is good too. I put Doh's chances of success somewhere less than JJ's, but let's give him his full allotted time before we do anything (even if we could). Bottom line is that I appreciate Orsini's goal of Top 25 in everything we do. To me, he's done everything he can to get us there by hiring the right types of guys and giving them the free reign to get done what they need to get done to get us there. I am at a loss to say what else we could expect from Steve Orsini.
You know as well as the rest of us do that coaches don't operate "in the real business world." You and I don't sign contracts that are discussed on paper, we don't have thousands of people pay money to watch us work, we're not invited to go on TV and talk about how others in our professions perform. It's a nice catchphrase, but the parallel just isn't there.
And the real business world isn't the basketball industry or university administrations. Canning a 60k a year nobody is different then firing the CEO, who has 2 years of recruits under his belt. I'm not confident he'll turn it around, but you have to give him time, or it cripples your next hire. Think quality coaching candidates want to play for an AD w/a short leash, that doesn't stand behind his guys? What type of applicant are you looking at, if Orsini looks trigger happy. Furthermore, the freshman class looks good. He needs to rebuild the soph class w/a juco or two, and add something of value to the 09 frosh class. His job is difficult and won't be easy, but you have to give him a chance to do it. Firing a coach after year 2, pretty much, hurts more then it helps. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
