I really feel it is time to stop blaming the kids and roster inheritance for the state of the program..Doherty is given to much credit at times and not enough criticism..Grant it the court looks different and we have this new facility but what else is lookin up...The losses are stacking up faster and faster it seems..Doherty probably has the worse record out of any coach in SMU History in his three seasons...He has recruited his own team he's been here 3 going on 4 years now and people are still talking about his what he inherited when he came and also the players look there regressing..I been watchn SMU basketball game for a long time now...If you think about his first year he inherited a good team who may would have been better w/out the coaching change...He had four returing starters coming back Roberts, Pearson, Willingham who were double digit scorers the year before..Bamba, Ofeogbu, Killen and Rack...He had a junior/senior team his first year...Everybody put it on the kids and said wait til he can get his recruits...well it still hasnt been a change and he's brought in the whole team with the exeption of Fall and Dia who was Tubbs recruits..whats the next excuse...I feel his first year he had one of his better teams but they regressed as well as his last few teams..How long can you keep blaming it on the roster and players when the whole team is full of MD recruits...

He is actually still a few months shy of his 3 year anniversiary since being hired and obviously has yet to complete his third season.

Let's say for argument's sake that I agreed the 05-06 team was good. That team lost its top scorer/assist man (B-Hop) and its #2 rebounder/8ppg scorer (Morris). And I actually recall starting quite a bit, which leads me to want to say the team lost 2 starters. Essentially, the team likely should be worse or the same in 06-07 if you ask me, but I digress...

The 05-06 team went 12-15 during the season (4-10 in CUSA). Wins/Losses against notable opponents: W- TCU L- OU, OSU, Memph, UH

The 06-07 team went 14-16 during the season (3-13 in CUSA). Wins/Losses agaisnt notable opponents: W- TCU, Dayton L- OU, FSU, Memph (2x), UH (2x)

The season's are pretty damn similar to one another. Differences being that sans the second games against UH and Memph the 06-07 team finishes .500 during the season compared to 12-15 the season before. However, the 05-06 team won the first round CUSA tourney game against Rice whereas the 06-07 team lost in Rd 1.

Next season his first true recruiting class will be Juniors and he will have 2 Seniors bc of transfers. I think at that point I am willing to say its his team and that they have reasonable experience where expectations need to be MUCH higher than this year.

I really don't understand the point of this post...Mainly the part that Doherty is given credit for anything, at least reading this board, most seem to want him gone. I also think this is still pretty early into his tenure and by no means how you described it.

I take some crap for sticking up for Doherty...Truth is I am not happy where the program is at, but think he is being dealt with unfairly by some here on the board, so I try and balance it.

He will be back nextyear, no way will that not happen, lets see what recruits and JuCos he gets and how next season goes. He will then either be offered an extension or bought out.

We need to save these discussions for next year.

i feel so much dumber having read that.

I think we only have one recruit from Maryland. And just to be clear, Maryland is a suburb of DC and the Catholic schools in Maryland like DeMatha, Good Counsel, St. Johns have some excellent players which they recruited out of the inner city and gave them scholarships and who got the academic training to succeed. Gary Williams is being lambasted for losing recruits from Maryland schools.

I feel dumb just because I read it. But hey, it was his first post even though he has been following SMU for years.

Fall was a Tubbs recruit Dia was not. Which player was more highly recruited between the two? That would be Doherty's Dia.

Right - and if Fall plays well it is because he was "coached up" but Dia doesn't live up to the hype then it is because he (the player) is not working hard, not focused, etc. - either way doh gets credit or a pass

You know I always love the "I've been posting here since 1972, therefore I know more than you" mentality that some exhibit here on this board. It's right up there with "We've already discussed that before, why didn't you scan 13,000 posts before you expressed your opinion" pearl of wisdom.

I don't think we learned anything new from the post, but I'm glad he was able to vent his spleen. At this point, our solution has to be wait and see unless Doh chooses to leave. We can't buy out another contract and lose another year of recruiting. We wait and see if Doh can come through with a winning season next year. If not, he'll probably leave or leave for a reduced buy out, or will get a non-guaranteed contract extension in name only so that he can coach here for the full five years and still hit the recruiting trail. I'm hoping that this is the last losing season for awhile, but at this point, I am not seeing any light at the end of the tunnel.

Dia is close with Fall and that was in process before Doherty was hired as the coach..the last staff was already in on Dia...No Fall No Dia!!
