This excerpt from the DMN link below prior to Otis' suspension for the Bakersfield game is interesting in light of recent developments in football program


SMU men's basketball coach Matt Doherty said Otis, a freshman forward who had started against Memphis, was suspended for the game because he didn't attend study hall Sunday, showed up late to class on Tuesday and Thursday and was late to Saturday's pre-game meal.

The culture change is a work-in process. That blog was dated Feb. 7 so Doh has his discipline in place as well. First year players learn at some point during their freshman year and most turn out to be model student/athletes.

BTW, Mike Dement commented that .... the only player to not have to be suspended or disciplined during his tenure was Quinton Ross. no surprise there...and look where Q ended up.

June was able to implement in year one. Doh is in year three.

Punishment fits the crime and the point is well taken that all players hav a slip up from time to time. Being late to a meeting or Study Hall or Class can mean not starting or in some cases not suiting up. If the behavior continues then more steps can be taken.

No need to bring Jones into it, his "tough" policy is more than half BS and reaks in a hypocritical nature.

He releases 9 players that had "problems" the so called three strikes, but who were suprisingly not big contributors and/or disapointments, when players like Sanders and Robinson actually had to sit a game after their three strikes, yet are miraculousy still on the team.

I am sure that Jones was trying to make a point in a lost season but the whole thing seems a bit fishy and he has opened himself up for criticism about uneven punishment.

Agree completely with bagice. The JJ 3-strike rule only came into effect for his most important players when the season was an absolute lost cause. #17 more than exceeded the 3-strikes and even bragged about it before finally getting suspended. So while it is a good policy, it wasn't consistently enforced last season.

And I have no doubt that Otis has done more than his fair share of running & other conditioning drills to make up for his screw ups. The punishment wasn't simply sitting out one game.
