Frightening that basketball is a game based on putting the ball in the basket. Division 1 athletes should certainly be able to accomplish this task. One would think.

Actually, now that I think about it...up until Faye tied it...we had 7 points in 13 minutes.

How about losing a game where your opponent's shot 29% from the field and 15% from the 3 point line. Quite an accomplishment. We need to recruit some offense. Not only shooters but guys that can go to the basket.

I realized this last night as well and posted it in the game thread, was almost unbelievable when i realized we had just scored 12 points through the last 13 minutes of regulation and the five minute over time.

The string of turnovers obviously had a lot to do with it. Looking at their stats and our dominance on the boards, hard to figure out how we lost that.

We ourselves shot only 34% from the field, but the bigger difference was 21 TOs for SMU vs 9 for UTEP. Our game can largely be summed up by McCoy's performance last night. Leading scorer goes 2 for 13 with 5 turnovers. We couldn't shoot it and we kept giving it away. That is why we lost.

EDIT*** not blaming the loss on McCoy. just saying his game last night epitomized the game for the entire SMU team. poor shooting and not taking care of the ball.***

Did we ever get an explanation of the reason for the technical on Nyakundi? The UTEP announcers were dumbfounded that it was called and never themselves could find out why. That foul coupled with Nyakundi's stupid ticky foul on a reach around, sent him to the bench and cost us our best 3 point shooter.

Not making an excuse but wondering what the reason for the T was.

He was called for excessive celebration in chest bumping someone on the bench when UTEP called the timeout. A total chickensh*t call by the ref. During the TO when you can hear the UTEP radio announcers off the air, they were just ripping the official for making an idiotic call. Ended up only costing us 1 point, but losing Nayakundi really hurt.

I hate railing on Harp because I like the guy and he may yet find some confidence, ala Killen, but during that long scoreless stretch, he was in there for a good stretch of it and never even sniffed a shot. That really handicaps us, only having 4 players who could potentially shoot.

He did score once on a 4 on 1 on a put back after McCoy blew a layup, but other than that nothing. My one vivid memory is when the shot clock was about to expire, he got the ball with 2 seconds and had a wide open look just inside the three point line, but he passed it to Faye about 30 feet away who then had to catch and launch a contested desperation shot. Shoot that Ryan!

I was surprised to hear the announcers use the words "bad call" several times in reference to SMU and "lucky" and "fortunate" many times for UTEP. But as long as you continue to play badly, the calls are going to go that way.

UTEP had a 12 minute stretch in which they scored only 8 points. The first 9 minutes of that stretch they only scored only 4 points. And they were the home team.

Of course no one wants to bring that up bc only SMU has scoring slumps. And of course SMU's defense couldn't have had anything to do with UTEP's offensive woes and we certainly should not try and credit our team for their defense.

Very true, Our defense and rebounding was outstanding, unfortunately, we couldnt put it in the basket ourselves, this is a perfect example of the old adage that you cannot win by defense alone.

I thought I only had to worry about that idiotic rule in football, but now they are applying it to basketball as well? The NCAA must really be bored.

this was just the case of an idiot official being stupid. I have never seen a call like that in a college game, and hope to never see it again.

Another "how in the hell did we lose this game" stat was that UTEP was only 16-26 from the free throw line...
