Conference USA Awards: Paul McCoy All-Freshman Team, Bamba Fall All-Defensive Team

Mustangs Face Houston In First Round Of The C-USA Championship On Wednesday At 8:30 p.m.

March 10, 2009

IRVING, Texas (SMU/C-USA) --- SMU's Paul McCoy made the Conference USA All-Freshman team and senior Bamba Fall was selected to the C-USA All-Defensive team, the league announced Tuesday. This is the second time Fall has been so honored, also making the Conference USA All-Defensive team as a sophomore in 2006-07.

McCoy is averaging a team-high 13.4 points and is on pace to become the first freshman to lead the Mustangs in scoring. He has twice been named C-USA Rookie of the Week and has led the team in scoring 12 times as a freshman, which ties for the record at SMU (Jeryl Sasser in 1997-98). McCoy is 15th in C-USA in scoring (13.4), ninth in field-goal percentage (45.4), seventh in steals (1.68), and 15th in assist to turnover ratio 1.14 while averaging 3.0 assists. Among C-USA freshmen, he leads in field-goal percentage, is second in scoring, second in steals, fourth in assist to turnover ratio, and first in minutes at 34.39. In C-USA games, he averaged 12.1 points per game (22nd), and ranks 14th in assists (3.20), 14th in assist to turnover ratio (1.07), and 11th in minutes (34.87).

Fall is currently second in C-USA with 2.28 blocks per game. He had a season-high five on four occasions and now has 244 blocked shots for his career as he trails only Jon Koncak's SMU record of 278. He is also leading the team and ranks seventh in the league in rebounds (7.3), fourth in offensive rebounds (2.69), and seventh in defensive rebounds (4.62). He is hitting 57.6 percent from the field this season, which would be seventh in a season at SMU. In league play, he shot 64.6 percent from the floor.

The Mustangs begin play in the Conference USA Championship at the FedExForum in Memphis against the Houston Cougars on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. The game is available on KAAM 770 AM or at SMUMustangs.com.

What happened to your 79-62 UH prediction?

I like this one better. Really looking forward to this game, if SMU can penetrate and get easy looks at the basket like last game, we have a great shot.

And congrats to McCoy and Bamba on their Honors.

Need a repeat of the last year of the SWC, when we upset Houston in 1st round. Was at that game, really exciting...I remember Jameil Rich getting a big steal to ice the win at the end....Then he went off on Texas the next round for over 30 points, even though we lost....I remember he made the all tournament team.
