DAKAR, Senegal (SMU) --- SMU senior forward Mouhammad Faye has been named to the 2009 Senegal national team. The team will compete in the Zone 2 qualifying event of the 2009 African Championships from May 15-20 in Mali. If the Senegalese advance from the Zone 2 qualifier, they will compete in the 25th African Championships from Aug. 5-15 in Libya.
"It is always a great honor to play for the Senegalese national team," states Faye, who also played on the 2007 national team. "I am excited about the opportunity to represent my country and SMU against outstanding international competition."
In 2008-09, Faye averaged 9.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in his first season with the Mustangs. Faye, a native of Dakar, Senegal, was also part of 2007 Senegalese national team that played in the African Championships in Angola. The 2007 squad included Bamba Fall, who just completed his senior season at SMU.
"This is a great honor for Mouhammad," says SMU head coach Matt Doherty. "Every chance to play for your country in international competition is exciting. He will represent Senegal and SMU very well."
