SMU Women’s Basketball Signs Three Recruits To National Letters of Intent
Players will be eligible to compete beginning in fall of 2010.

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women’s basketball program announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent for the 2010-11 season. The class includes two post players, Akil Simpson and Mallory Singleton as well as a lengthy guard, Raven Short. The class has a local flavor, as all three are from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Simpson is a 6’0 post player from Duncanville High School, the same school that produced current Mustangs, Kristin Hernandez and Jasmine Davis. Simpson was named to the TABC 5A All-State team as well as TABC 5A All-Region I squad. As a junior she averaged 12 points per game and eight rebounds.

Singleton, is the tallest of the three signees at 6’2. She is from Flower Mound High School and was named 2008-09 1st Team All-District. She put up 11 points per game and six rebounds, as well as two blocks, showcasing her defensive skill. Aside from the postseason honors, Singleton was also named to the All-Tournament team of the Lady Jaguar Basketball Tournament.

The lone guard of the group, Short, is another local product from Flower Mound Marcus High School. The team won the 2008-09 District 6-5A Championship, and Short was an integral part of the team, being named 1st Team All-District following the season. She averaged 12 points per game and seven rebounds to go along with four assists a contest.

“The beauty of this class is that all three are from good high school programs,” head coach Rhonda Rompola said. “They are used to winning basketball games and those are the kinds of players you want on your team.”

SMU will begin the 2009-10 season on Friday against Loyola Marymount at 5:30 p.m. in Moody Coliseum. Fans that purchase a women’s ticket will also be granted admission to the men’s game against South Florida later that night as part of a doubleheader.

It's amazing how Rompola's team gets a major injury seemingly every year lately to a key player.
