IRVING, Texas (SMU) - Brittany Gilliam became the first SMU women's basketball player of the season to earn Conference USA Player of the Week after leading the Mustangs to a 73-59 win over East Carolina Saturday in Dallas.
The senior led all scorers with 19 points, while leading a defensive effort that held the league's top scoring offense with 75.7 points per game to its third lowest total of the season, propelling the Mustangs past the Pirates and into a three-way tie for first-place in the conference.
Gilliam was 7-of-14 from the field, including a season-high four 3-pointers, connecting on 4-of-5 shots from behind the arc. Seven of Gilliam's 19 points were scored during a two-minute stretch late in the second half, ending ECU's comeback effort. Her 19 points and seven rebounds are season-highs against conference opponents. The guard also had three assists and three steals in the win.
Gilliam will lead the Mustangs into Houston this week as the Mustangs take on Rice and Houston. SMU will tip-off with Rice Thursday at 7 p.m., and face the Cougars Saturday at 2 p.m.
