PA guy needs improvement

Overall, the new guy has done a pretty decent job. However, he said two things yesterday that were way out of line:

• When he announced, with a couple of minutes left, that SMU was poised to beat Memphis for the first time in 50 years.

That might be true, but saying it over the public address system was completely unprofessional. First of all, we were up by fewer than 10 points with a couple of minutes left. Memphis EASILY could have come back and won, in which case the PA guy, and by extension SMU, would have looked ridiculous. Plus, it made a mockery of Coach Doherty's rant after the UAB meltdown about how "there's a right way to do things."

• He also said something about "don't rush the floor until the officials and opponents are off the floor" — again, basically telling Memphis "we plan to go crazy after beating you." That's not to say celebrating is wrong, but announcing celebration plans before the game is over doesn't exactly smack of "doing things the right way."

Agree 100%.

After the winning proclamation, several of the Memphis players looked up at the scoreboard and each other --- let's try not to motivate our opponent when we are barely ahead and there is plenty of time left.

Glad he didn't throw in "Its a long drive back to Memphis"

Absolutely. I wonder if he was told to say that stuff or where it came from.

"Don't rush the floor" was said with about :45 secs on the clock. Ridiculous.

He's an improvement over the last guy. Why is it so hard to find a guy who is professional and knows what he's doing in fball and bball. Don't they audition or something?

every minor league hockey PA guy would be a step up, IMO. As well as all kinds of former employees of arenafootball2. No idea why it's so difficult for us to get it done. Ive been to games at 3 CHL venues (okay, sometimes I get bored)...each of them are consistent in gameday presentation better choreographed than ours.

Ah, CenturyTel Center - nice place. CHL Hockey can be fun. When they started the team in Corpus, they played at an old arena (it was like a smaller version of Moody) that was old and worn out, but all the spectators were right on top of the action and the crowd was LOUD. Now, they play at the American Bank Center (think Dodge Arena but bigger and slightly more upscale - with a panoramic view of the bay and downtown Corpus from the concourse). Nice place, but everyone is so far away from the action that the atmosphere suffers. That's one of the reasons why I favor minimal changes to Moody. Fix the things that need fixing, yes, and perhaps add some suites up top, but otherwise, just leave it be.

Now back to the topic - our PA guy needs to learn what to say and what not to say. I put the blame on the gameday presentation folks - don't they tell him what he's supposed to say?

when we had the Mr Sweet on loan from SWA, the gameday presentation was an open topic-he'd blog about it, talk about how nervous he was about pulling off a good event, etc-since then, we all complain about it-but who are these "gameday presentation" people? The others? Conspirators? Secret Society? Members of the stonecutters?
