Why would you want to play for Coach Doh?

Postby tmustangp » Thu Feb 11, 2010 9:15 am

Obviously Doherty learned nothing from the demise of Coach Bennett.. We are in a new age and the belittling of your players especially to the nationally local newspaper is not going to fire your kids up.
"We were timid," Doherty said. "It looked like we were afraid out there." NOT THE FIRST TIME YOU HAVE SAID THIS DOH..

"I'm real disappointed in our team, our lack of leadership, especially from Derek and Pop," Doherty said. "Derek kind of hid, and Pop seemed to be kind of afraid of [UTEP center Derrick] Caracter."
-what coach who has a record of below .500 says this about his team..

Doherty, you need to find a full length mirror and take a good long look it at.. I have never been to a practice, but THE PLAYERS REFLECT YOU AS A COACH.. So maybe you are not that tough and maybe you are not a good leader..

For example, Bob Huggins.. Probably not the best moral character in the world, but his players sure do play for him and always have at whatever school he was at.

Sybil? Didn't he recruit these guys? Hasn't he had them in the "program" a couple of years? Our play is hot 'n cold... just like the coach. No consistency whatsoever. It appears they have quit listening. When that happens, it's over. One never knows what to expect when the lights come on at Moody - I guess that's why I'll keep showing up. And those obnoxious UTEP fans cheering loudly for their team... What's up with that? Seemed like SMU team and SMU fans followed Clayton Williams' advice.......

Oh lord, they've won what, 4 out of the last 6, only dropping USM (while losing Paul McCoy) and UTEP (a superior team to us athletically), and it "appears they have quit listening?" Give me a break.

I will have to disagree about Doh's toughness as he was never known to be timid and he certinaly is not that way now with his coaching or persona. Several of the guys were not aggressive at all last night but that doesn't come from the coach. You need to step up internally and they didn't, especially Papa as he was totally faced by Caracter all game, even when he had an uncontested shot.
Unfortunatly sometimes Doh speaks his mind and I have to agree with him about last nights game and hopefully it makes the guys mad enough to man up next game.
As far as a leader and having guys play for you that could be another subject, but UTEP is tough and we don't have those kind of athletes to play heads up with them. And with McCoy out for the season we are not deep either to hang with athletic, long teams like UTEP.

Everyone is such a poosey around here. You want to fault Doh for last night, look back to game 1 and ask why we didn't bring Otis @ Caracter. It was damn effective the first go round, and made sense physically. Dia did play soft and Will had like 4 or 5 shot attempts w/3 minutes to play. We can't win if they don't ball and they didn't. Last night wasn't about Doh, it was about being outgunned offensively, especially now that McCoy is out and Haynes won't be a SG. Again, if Dia reverts to being timid, and Will is having an off night, it's over. Next year we have a more diverse group w/better skills to help take pressure off Pap etc.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

Perhaps somebody should explain to Doh that leadership starts at the top (ala coach).

This is in response to PonyDoh as well, but how in the hell are you touting next year? What has Doherty shown since he has been here that gives ANY indication he can mold a coherent game plan on either end of the court? I'm seeing the same [deleted] that I have been seeing since year one.

This might be the most maddening offense in the history of college athletics. It sets us up for bad shots...in fact I guarantee you that Doherty has put a bounty out that if you shoot with more than 10 seconds on the shot clock you are coming out of the game. I saw a couple of times when we had lanes the player took a step towards the basket and wheeled around and came out.

The true sign of scared team is when they turn the ball over or make a mistake and immediately look over at the coach. I saw it numerous times in the second half last night. And then you have Doofus-Doh stomping around like a six year old. I'm SO done with him. I don't even care anymore that he is a good guy, the guy is a horrible coach.

And winning 4 of our last 6 just shows how bad this conference is. Make no mistake this a bad team and no amount of supposedly good Euros next year is going to make a lick of difference with the same coach.

Can you clear this up? To me that seems like a real good reason to blame Doh, since you know, he makes the lineup...

RE Tycoon - Doh has finally settled on a system, and lo and behold, the recruits we have coming in actually fit the system he settled on. For the first three and a half years here, he showed no direction whatsoever, and our players right now don't fit this system at all.

Besides, it has surfaced that Doh has 7 years on his contract anyway. It wouldn't make economic sense to buy him out with 3 years left.

I went to the game last night I saw players hustle and play as hard as they could. I think the problems with their play was in the coaching. Doh has gotta go!

The genius of his system is that there is no system. Excuses are fun and if he's still here when his contract expires I'm sure we will hear more excuses.

I'm done with him and frankly his system sucks and is boring. I sit there in my hard Moody seat cringing every time we touch the ball waiting to see how we turn the ball over or throw up a brick this time.

Let's end this failed bit. If I had money I would buy him out (don't tell me there is no buyout b/c there is, even if it's the value of his remaining contract). Someone be a real champion and step up!

I don't know about that. Don't think coaching has much to do with three straight turnovers from trying to inbound the damn basketball. Yes, I think Doh sometimes overcoaches during games. And yes, I think he's a little high strung during games. BUT...I'd like to see what happens with Dia after another year of working with Geary, plus Pastevich, hopefully we get Lloyd out of Vegas and comine that with Richmond Vilde.

I hope so. But seems to me when we call time outs after every screw up or everytime we get caught in a trap, we should figure out how to beat it. Very frustrating, isn't it!

It is frustrating. But we only have a finite number of timeouts.

7 Years!? Giving Doh a 7 year deal was idiotic if someone really did that. Are you telling me Doh was a hot commodity? He was at Florida Atlantic for godsake which is basically Siberia in college basketball. Makes some sense though, maybe thats why Doherty seems proud of having now chosen a style for the program in his 4th year when it is sort of appalling to many of us at this point. I guess he's got plenty of time to start over and do a second rebuild after the first one didn't work.

Next years freshman class sounds promising. But what is pairing several freshmen with Papa Dia as a senior really going to do for us next year? 15-15? Then when Papa graduates, whose your center? i don't see anybody young on the roster right now that is being groomed and I don't think Leslie Smith is your future true center is he? Thats pretty important if you are gonna play a grind it out half court style. My point is the roster is broken and still several years away from pointing toward a good team in my opinion. That could change with a talented Juco or transfer or two that can be fully productive in the 2011-12 season, but as of right now the future is still just a glimmer in our eye.
