W-Basketball Earns Women's National Invitation Tournament Bid
Mustangs Will Play At New Mexico In First Round

March 15, 2010

DALLAS (SMU) - The Mustangs will face New Mexico in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament Wednesday at 8 p.m. CT, earning SMU's fourth bid to the WNIT and second consecutive trip.

SMU posted a 20-10 record this season, led by a core of three seniors who have played in both the NCAA Tournament (2008) and the WNIT (2009). The Mustangs finished third in Conference USA, posting a 10-6 record, but fell to UAB 64-55 in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Championship.

First-Team All-Conference USA selection Brittany Gilliam and fellow seniors Jillian Samuels and Alice Severin, along with junior Haley Day, are making their third trip to a postseason tournament.

The 2010 WNIT is a field of 64 with 31 automatic bids and 33 at-large. The top team of each conference that did not make the NCAA Tournament earns the automatic bid. Houston earned the automatic bid from Conference USA. This is the first year the WNIT has expanded to 64 teams adding 16 more bids. This is the 13th year of the postseason WNIT.

The Lobos went 18-12 this season, and finished tied for fifth in the Mountain West Conference with a 9-7 record in conference play. New Mexico beat Colorado State in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament before falling to Utah in the quarterfinals.

SMU is 2-1 all-time against New Mexico, facing the Lobos for the first time in Jan. 12, 1997. New Mexico won the first meeting 66-45, before SMU won the next two, including a 53-45 victory in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament March 5, 1999.

The Mustangs are making their fourth appearance in the WNIT, going 2-3 all-time in the tournament. SMU first appeared in the WNIT in 1993, going 2-1 in Amarillo, Texas. The Mustangs also made the postseason tournament in 2005 and 2009, falling on the road in the first round.

SMU is making its 11th postseason appearance since 1983 and third straight postseason tournament.

The winner of the New Mexico - SMU game will face the winner of the Oregon - Eastern Washington game. That game will be played at Oregon Thursday.
