UTEP/HOUSTON/MEMPHIS LOSSES=SMU EVEN WORSE THEN WE THOUGHT??

Postby moodymadmen » Sat Mar 20, 2010 12:14 pm

So in the "real world" of college basketball, outside of a soft conference and softer non conference schedules, the three best CUSA has to offer got smacked around on the big stage. CUSA #1 seed UTEP was dominated by Butler, CUSA champ Houston was handled by double digits by Maryland, and "signature win" Memphis lost in the second round of the NIT. If these are the best teams in our conference and they just got pushed aside easily, doesn't it mean that SMU is even worse then we thought??? We finished 7-9 in a very soft conference and are 30 games under .500 in CUSA under Doh. Between our joke of a non conference schedule and the current conditions of our conference I'm simply amazed we finished 14-17. The first weekend of march madness and the performances of CUSAs big 3 make me feel SMU and Doh are even worse then I originally feared.

Give me a break. Anyone who knows anything about college basketball could not have come to the conclusion that SMU is worse than we thought based upon UTEP/Houston/Memphis losing.

Memphis won their first round NIT and lost on the road to Mississippi (a rival of theirs). UH got the daunting task of facing ACC co-champion Maryland and played a pretty good game, but was out muscled underneath. UTEP got beat by a team that was raining threes (I think they actually set a first round record for 3 point shots made) and many were contested. UTEP led at the half and then the 3's started hitting, ball game over. Let's see how UAB does 2 nite. And yes, I agree we did not meet our goals this year.

Precisely. We sucked this year, but this thread is ridiculous.

Calallen, you are a walking contradiction...so are you telling me if Houston had made a run to the Sweet 16 it wouldn't have made you feel better about our conference or SMU knowing they beat them? Of course it would have. Or if UTEP had made a run it wouldn't have made you think 'man we played them close on the road maybe we did make some progress'? Well the opposite it also true if the 3 best teams in the conference you just finished 7-9 against fall on their faces. If your "signature win" during your 4 year tenure loses in the first round of the CUSA tourney or if UTEP and Houston both lose by double digits in round 1 then that should tell you something about how far back we are in the college basketball landscape.. And if it doesn't your head if buried further in the sand then I thought.

Yes, I would have said that, but that doesn't make me a walking contradiction. I thought that UTEP and Houston would lose in the first round, so the losses tell me that I pinned SMU correctly. For that matter, I thought Memphis would lose to St Johns in the first round of the NIT.

Moodymadmen, there are two things which have become evident in your posts.

1) You want Doherty fired.
2) You will make any argument, illogical as though it may be, to try to get Doherty fired.

Please note that 1) Doherty isn't going to be fired this year, and 2) While some of your arguments contain some truth, your illogical arguments make you look foolish and will cause people to overlook your better arguments.

Restated, your fallacy is that you never considered that the performance of our conference mates met my expectations.

Further, I expected Southern Miss to lose to La Tech.

I didn't expect Marshall to have so much trouble against Western Carolina, but they got through that game. I don't know enough about Appy State to have expectations about that matchup.

I fully expect UAB to lose to NC State.

People see things the way they want to. I saw butler rough up UTEP, and all I thought was how we're on track w/style of play and tempo. I saw Maryland rip Houston and i thought how nice it will be to have more big kids next year and better passing. Did people think Houston was going to give the ACC regular season co-champs a run? That UTEP match-up was miner kryptonite stylistically. Butler is just a far more advanced version of what we're trying to get done.

To be fair, they have far better gameday coaching.

I'm not a Doh bench guy, but he wasn't bad on the bench this year. His teams lack chemistry and discipline, which he best change now, or it's over.

Has our mens basketball program hit rock bottom yet? Will we go 20 years between trips to the NCAA tournament?

This board questioned virtually every move or lack of moves by Doh in all games well into the conference schedule. Specifically his substitutions and player combinations. I'm not sure you can say he was not that bad. For his experience and hype you certainly cannot give him very good grades.
