CUSA vacancies and candidates!

Lots of Doh haters around here, which I certainly understand, but we've hashed and rehashed that topic to death. My question is, after looking at the other CUSA vacancies, which are on par w/our position, would you be happy w/the quality of candidate in their searches, if it was ours?

For example, ECU currently has 6 candidates that I know of, Joe Dooley, Bobby Lutz, Jeff Lebo, Chuck Driesell, Mike Lonergan & Brad Brownell. Who represents a definitive upgrade?

Lutz represents an upgrade, I think. Dooley possibly, too. (Note: this is from an ECU perspective, not from an SMU perspective)

Dooley already was fired from the position. That would be like us having Dement on our next search list. Is that inspiring? What has Lutz done other then fail, since moving to the A-10?

To me, that list is a massive fail, and I'm not sure UCFs is much better. If they manage to get Paul Hewitt, it's still not a true upgrade. GREAT recruiter to an ACC school in Atlanta, horrible developer of talent/teams, and an abysmal bench coach.

I know, but I don't think he was ready for the position to begin with. It was a mistake to hire him in the first place. As far as Lutz goes, he knows recruiting in the Carolinas, has decent name recognition in that region, and won in a much stronger CUSA. Besides, he was fired after a 19-12 season...yes, they've been up and down since moving to the A10, but he's not a bad coach.

Hewitt will not be an upgrade for UCF, but I don't see them getting him anyway.

Bottom line, when SMU needs a new coach, we need to go after an assistant at a top Texas program...someone like Springman, or perhaps Jerome Tang from Baylor who is very dialed in to the AAU scene in Texas.

I agree, but what sort of upgrade does a list like Springmann, Tang, Spinelli, and an old Rob Evans represent? I'm not opposed to this direction at some point, and think it makes some sense, but those candidates are really far from a slam dunk. Maybe throw in Ken McDonald if he gets Western Kentucky back on the map. Still, we better have a better applicant pool if we're going to pull the trigger and expect an immediate bump in hype, revenue etc

Rob Evans doesn't represent an upgrade at all.

If we pull the trigger, I think it's because the bit of progress we saw this year turned out to be an aberration, and at that point we'll need a total rebuild. That's why I think we need to go after a younger guy who knows the local scene (for recruiting) who can upgrade the talent level and find decent pieces to a decent system. Build excitement in the program through winning and the hope of a bright future, rather than through a "big name" who will give us a one year bump in revenue.

fwiw, I know a booster who told me he was asked for a commitment to help buy out THE FINAL YEAR of Doherty's contract then suddenly the calls went silent and he read in DMN about 2 years remaining. Did Orsini not know about the extensions until he went out to raise money?

sounds like our luck. Doh starts to hear rumblings & Orsini gets a letter from Doh's attorney/agent saying "did yall forget about this? You were supposed to do xyz, and you didnt, so technically I'm in the middle of a 7 year deal"

Yes Doh, that is interesting for ECU.

MVC schools seem to get it right most of the time.

Houston probably decided Penders was beyond saving the night he lost to Doh and SMU. Just like the Hawaii tournament was Doh's Waterloo. We had fans there and everything for the football team, and couldn't even win the 7th place game and looked horrible losing it. We had mccoy then too so whatever we were, we were.

What happened to the good old days when we had a booster's relative on the team to rat out the coach to the administration?

I think the booster in question is a proponent of the guy we have
