Fire Doherty!

According to Rivals he bet on the wrong player.

I've had enough of his cluster [deleted] management. Give him a salary and a meaningless title and let him play golf with rich alums and blog about eating at Mi Cocina, that's what he's good at.

I'm assuming you didn't mean he literally "bet" on a player.
What are you talking about?

Hey, it's obvious you are the Captain of the Doherty ship, and you are going down with the ship. That's very admirable.

I'm not entirely convinced that if we went 0-fer next year that you wouldn't be on here touting the amazing recruiting class we have coming in to save us all.

The silver lining with the decommitt is that hopefully Doh won't overload the class with another large class of misses and handicap the next guy.

yea, except I could care less if Doh is the coach or not. You completely miscategorize my stance, which isn't surprising. I'm not going down w/any ship, b/c I'll be valuable to the next staff, no different then the current one. I'm program people, not a Doh fan-boi.

All I'm saying is that threads like this are tired. He's our coach through next year, we're currently recruiting a huge class in '11 and threads like this don't help the effort. Beyond that, you have no earthly idea what happened in this PG recruitment, nor does Armen/Josh or most anyone else who posts on these boards. I saw the whole thing up close, and it's didn't go down how you seem to think.

I'm pissed about Fab, don't confuse that. I don't love Jeremiah, understand that. What you need to grasp is that we didn't even have 1 ship to give, much less 2, unless they were both manufactured via forced attrition. Beyond that, Doh saw every available PG in America, I kid you not. The staff saw individual workouts, playoff games, pick up, skill drills etc. They didn't settle as much as they made an evaluation, that doesn't make sense to people, whose only understanding of recruiting is a grade assigned by the services.

Maybe Jeremiah sucks, and if so it's on Doh. It'll also be his job. That said, we took a kid the head coach is exceptionally high on, after working out everyone personally. Did you want Sham b/c he's got a nice ESPN grade, even though Doh hated him 3 out of 4 times this Spring? You know that's not happening. Ultimately, it's all just wait and see w/regards to Jeremiah. Until then, let's lay off the kid, and trust that our basketball people actually made an informed decision. It's not the popular decision, I get that, but "fire doh' threads, mid recruiting season, is poor form. It doesn't accomplish anything and may hurt our ability to acquire talent in a huge class.

I agree with Ponydoh. Stop the negativity as it does hurt recruiting, etc for the next season and so on. I have no idea about Fabyon Harris beyond the stories I read on this site and links to Chicago stories. Sounded like a high risk student athlete to begin with considering all of the haze(murdered brother, character flaws, posse influence, poor grades, etc). Why would SMU want it anyway? I was a little disappointed when SMU offered. I was also heavily against offering a football player that previsouly shot somebody. Where there is smoke there is usually fire or at minimum a propensity for fire. I am glad SMU did not get Fab for reasons that go beyond how well he breaks a press or jacks up 3's. The PG from Tampa will have a lot to prove but I do think he will work out. I am hopeful for the sake of the team and the program.

PonyDoh, I actually was unimpressed with Fab's "rankings", I was just going off your's and other poster's reviews and the videos I saw (which left me underwhelmed, but I deferred to people who follow recruiting more). But the guy we ended up signing impressed me the least. I don't care about Sham and have never posted about the guy, I was focused on Lloyd more than any other PG possibility.

If a recruit comes on here and decides to not commit because of something one of the morons on here posts (including myself), then Doh is not doing his job. Which is the impetus of the "Fire Doherty!" post, he couldn't or didn't close the deal with Fab and that is on Doh. There is NO way the kid from Florida is better. Glad he had a backup plan, but you gotta ask the question how many other plans did Doh fail to execute?

As far as PonyDoh, you obviously have some connection to the program (try sticking with a name when Doh goes so we can see if you are consistent), but you've never stated what that is. Frankly I don't care, but you might want to rethink posting on the board if you are "of value" to the program. You post cryptic messages about how you have inside information about how things go down, and I'm happy for you, but maybe it's not so good that you're on here letting us kinda/sorta know tidbits after the fact that you never back up with real information. I'm not saying it has been, but it might not be good in the future.

In the end we all want this program to be a perennial tourney team, and it's frustrating so many settle for mediocrity year after year. As a season tix holder who sits through these debacles, I blame SO for the dumbest contract in history as much as I blame Doh.

The good news, at least Doh had a Plan B. :D The bad news, Plan A didn't work out. :( Hopefully this kid will turn out to be a stud for us. He's short and from what I've seen a bit run and gun, which is not what Doh runs as his offense. Hopefully he's coachable and anxious to prove himself. I am not terribly surprised that Plan A didn't work out. We offered and he didn't get the numbers necessary to qualify. We are not an academic rubber stamp and some great players get the Larry Johnson treatment by the Administration (which quite frankly is better than having them here for the first semester only to have them ineligible for the second semester which we've seen happen as well). We are probably not going to land many one year rentals (if any). So, we settled on Plan B, let's hope Plan B works out. Doh needed a pure point guard, hopefully this kid will work out.

First,

Plan A was llloyd, swing and miss
plan b was fabyon, who didn't go to a basketball academy, he just went to cps, if he got the scores he is in...why wouldn't you tell your recruits that the job is yours and we want you to play with each other...it amazes me that you can't sell 2 recruits that play the same position...not to mention that jeremiah wasn't going anywhere else
plan c is this guy...

so, he didn't strike out but he certainly took his time and missed with the first 2...

ponydoh can defend this all he wants..but this does not speak well for doh...I agree ranking aren't the be all end all, but this kid was prominetly mentioned throughout the florida high school awards and still couldn't get any offers, prob b/c he has very limited range.

Harris was under the rader a bit in the city of chicago and many didn't think he would qualify...If fab played in florida with all of this kids accolades he would have more offers...

How was plan A Loyd, when we offered Jeremiah, he accepted, and then we called Loyd and said the ship was gone? He didn't say no, I'm not coming to SMU. Just the week prior, Doh was in Vegas & Loyd said he'd visit. When Doh fell in love w/Jeremiah, it was over. Beyond that, loyd was offered by UNLV, so that's that. We stepped to the plate, tried to wait him out, and in the process found a kid the head coach liked as much. Same thing happened earlier in the process when the found Bryon Allen. He had the highest upside of anyone, and certainly was way ahead of Fab on the wish list. Sham was all but locked up, and we thought he was the guy for awhile as well. Then Doh caught his stretch run in the playoffs, every single game & workouts, and didn't like him. Again, don't get this confused w/me defending Doh, as I liked many guards more then Jeremiah. Of course, I didn't watch them work out over & over. You can say there is no way Jeremiah is better then Fab, but none of us have a clue, especially when taking the current system into acccount.

This is a mountain out of a mole hill. We're talking about how a staff evaluates 2 & 3 star types, not opting for a 2 star type w/a 4 star or 5 star as an option. This is 6 of one, half dozen the other. I think many like Fab, myself included, b/c he has swag. OTOH, he plays a ton like Derek Williams. Maybe just maybe, this is an attempt at getting people involved and getting some team assists, as opposed to another lead guard looking to shoot. I'm not sure what the final rationale was, but I know Doh really likes the guy he got. Until we see them play, that's about what there is to it.

I'm hoping this decision was ALL about getting a role player in here, i.e., a TRUE PG who will help other guys get involved and stay engaged...maybe even get all 5 guys on the floor playing together. How nice would that be? Let's face it, we don't have the type of talent where any one guy is going to carry the team. We haven't had that kind of PG at SMU in a long, long time...how far do we have to go back in time...Billy Allen? Butch Moore?

If you look at Dohs quotes from the season, specifically w/regards to the new system & recruiting to it, it seems this was a system choice. To be completely blunt, of the final 6 or 7 PGs we looked at, most were lead guards in the DWill mold. It's very possible Jeremiah isn't even in the top 5 in talent that we looked at. Its also possible that he's the only one who can say passing is his best skill.

This upcoming team has a few weapons or should, but as you say, they need to be involved and stay engaged.
