"[Southern Methodist coach] Matt Doherty wants him to sign, but why sign and go through all that and they don't have a scholarship for him?" Hyde Park coach Donnie Kirksey said. "My kid's not going to have a scholarship."

Instead, Harris, a 5-foot-8 point guard, is back on the market, and Baylor, DePaul, Fairfield, Florida State, Houston and Southern Illinois already have all expressed interest in him.

So what's the story here?

Is he really qualified? Did we really jump on the other guy with no offers instead of waiting a few days for the test scores? I'd appreciate anyone who could clear up this situation.

The pony tailed dude from Florida might turn out to be the greatest PG in SMU history.
However, when you look @ Fab's test score & the type of schools he is now receiving interest from, you got another DOH ?? head scratcher. The new dude didn't get a sniff from programs anything like what Fab is receiving. Maybe Doh just didn't want to deal with the baggage that he thought might accompany Fab? Who knows. The fact is Doh screws up another recruiting situation. Flashbacks of
Dubois situation. BTW, Dubois averaged 13 pts his freshman year & Loyola Marymount & 12.5 last season.

He's not qualified by SMU standards, but he's now a partial, so he could have prepped, or go to a school like Depaul that takes partials. He still has a shot to totally qualify as well. Basically, even w/the test jump, he's still not good to play at SMU, just a bunch closer.

The kid who signed w/Utah this morning, PG from Howard JC, wanted to come to SMU. We were told he was ours by his AAU head & handler, until we saw his transcript. Now he gets into Utah? I don't care what Stallion or whomever says, the kids we can't get in, is astounding.

I heard a rumor yesterday that 6 or more of Junes kids aren't getting in too. Sucks to be us

Which do I buy? The ongoing admissions excuses or the smu coaching staff can't recruit.
Its interesting that they never tell u they got out recruited, etc. Its always, the kid wanted to come here until we saw his transcripts. To many talented local & state kids around here to fall for that.
If that really is the case, the staff is doing a TERRIBLE job of identifying prospects. Looks like they are chasing their tales all over the country looking at suspects. One recommendation. Do your homework, check out the kids grades before you journey all around the country looking @ kids that can't supposedly qualify. Don't buy it. Its just POOR RECRUITING. The results prove that.

They got outrecruited for Allen, Papa. They really didn't budge the top 3 w/Loyd. Its not always about grades, sometimes kids just go elsewhere, especially when they have better offers. It's amazing how many people are cruxifying Doh over a kid that isn't qualified.

Getting transcripts released and sent to staffs isn't science, BTW. Many times you request the transcript, ask all the appropriate people about a players qualifying, and then check him out. Transcript doesn't trickle in until later. If you waited on every kid until they had their transcripts in, you'd never look at kids, at least not in time. What you suggest makes no sense.

I'm dissapointed w/how the PG search ended as well, but Doh likes his kid. We'll see what he has. I'm skeptical, but as I've said, the staff saw all these kids multiple times. It's not like we're grabbing random unscouted kids, or taking a 2 star over a 5 star. All these kids have huge holes as prospects, or they would have far better offers.

wonder which 6 of our football class aren't getting in.

That said, should create an opportunity for De'Von to get a scholie, which I hope he gets.

Can we move on and quit talking about Harris? He's certainly moved on from us. Quotes like "I've decomitted and won't be going there any more" are a lot different from re-opening his recruiting. Besides, every time I see a reference to "Fab", I think Milli Vanilli.

You can't give scholarships to partial qualifiers. (see amendment below re partial qualifier index)). They can pay their own way. Harris and 98% of prospects can't pay their own way into SMU. So it has nothing to do with SMU's ACADEMIC standards-it has to do with the NCAA Rule and SMU tuition which ain't going to change. None of the kids June Jones signed last year that didn't get in last year(and there were a lot) went anywhere else when they found out they hadn't gotten into SMU suggesting they weren't qualifiers either. This year I know from written reports that at least 2 SMU in-coming recruits needed major improvements to qualify. I'd be surprised if it was 6 but Jones is recruiting borderline recruits and hoping they qualify. Why do you think we oversign every year now-it should have been understood by now that several might not qualify.

Now in Harris' case, SMU might well have flagged his score-I don't know. Went from needing "3-4 points" on his ACT to a 19. Here's an SAT/ACT comparison chart-that is the equivalent to about a 250 point increase in his SAT. Apparently, the ACT doesn't flag ACT scores anymore which is what started the Ken Pye/Larry Davis fiasco. ACT leaves it up to the school.

oops I forgot-they changed that rule recently. It is now POSSIBLE that a partial qualifier MAY be eligible to receive aid his first year and practice with the team if he meets certain standards see link. But he can't play. I've never really focused on this partial qualifier index before because it is new. I have no problem in declining scholarship to any kid who is not full qualifier-I have no problem signing and waiting to see if he makes it but SMU doesn't need to accept kids who can't meet the very low NCAA minimum qualification standards. Very few schools admit these non-qualifiers. We also have no idea what he has scored (CORE GPA)on his core courses or if he has his core credits

Bottom Line-Doherty had to have a PG in this class-that's the key point-so I don't see much choice or room for criticism if Harris is indeed a partial qualifier even if he could have been admitted under this new partial qualifier index. Plus SMU doesn't have the extra scholarship anyway.

When you are this late in the recruiting game you have to take a the sloppy leftovers.
Its a damn shame this coaching staff can't identify local & state talent earlier in the game & start bringing home the bacon.

I'll buy being critical for not landing some locals, but who weren't they on early, or among the first to offer, other then Groselle, which seems to be a staff debate. Are we supposed to offer Austin Chatman right now b/c he's local, but no other locals or nationals have offered? We have tons of ships out to kids in the '11 class throughout the state. Hopefully, a few suck it up and play for the good guys. If not, it certainly won't b/c we were late getting in, or didn't prospect the kid until too late

Yes, the truth is the staff goes after locals, they just haven't been successful in landing them. Short of hiring a guy like Coach K, Roy Williams, or Jim Boeheim to lead our program, I don't think there's any coaching staff in the nation right now that could successfully land local talent at SMU any better than the Dohcrew have. The politics of the situation are far too great right now.

That being said...I think the political aspect of recruiting to SMU will begin to lessen. Why? Right or wrong, because Tubbs is no longer with us (tragically).
