Joseph Young denied release

The case of Providence versus incoming recruit Joseph Young continues to fall in favor of PC, who Young signed a letter of intent with last November. Young petitioned to be released from the NLI citing his aunt’s failing health and a desite to play closer to home for that reason. PC decided not to release Young and his appeal to the NCAA’s Eligibility Center was denied as the Board Rules Against Young Looking to Void the Letter of Intent (Providence Journal).

Barring an unlikely reversal of fortune, Young will never see Providence. Young’s father, Michael, has spoken unwaveringly that his son needs to stay home to be near his aunt.

“The NLI system is crap,” Michael Young, a member of the Houston coaching staff said in the Providence Journal. “There’s no chance in Hell that Joseph would ever go to Providence.”

The elder Young had harsh words for PC coach Keno Davis, who he holds responsible for the situation.

“He’s a bad guy,” Michael Young said of PC’s Davis accoring to the Provdence Journal. “Anytime you deny a kid from something he has worked so hard for all of these years and kids are very emotional about situations like this.”

If young decides not to honor the NLI, he would have to sit out a season and have just three years of eligibility remaining. It is widely expected he will join his father at Houston.

Three things about this situation interest me. First, Joseph Young is legit and would hate to see him at Houston. Second, his Dad is pretty ignorant, as a Coug high assistant, to come out and blast the NLI system. His job completely relies on getting kids locked up early. Lastly, he's a two-faced turd to call out Davis, if only b/c the real reason he wants out of his NLI, is b/c his Dad is now at Houston. Everyone knows this, so short of them rolling out his crippled Aunt on her deathbed, they are both just lying through their teeth.

In short, suck a donkey dong, UH

Would the NCAA attempt to verify the illness in a situation like this?

I am surprised at your comments as you are normally quite informed. The argument you present about this being simply a case of him wanting to be coached by his father now that he is at UH is completely false because Michael Young has been on the Houston payroll for several years now. Perhaps he does want to play closer to his father, but that opportunity has been there for him for several years now. I have no clue about the aunt's health, but have to take it at face value.

If this kid is anything like his dad, he's a hell of a player. Dad never got any credit because he was on the same UH teams with Olajuwon and Drexler, but he was a very good player.

He's always had the option of playing at UH, no doubt. Also, his Aunt is awaiting a heart transplant. That said, I've known Keno Davis for years, and all the transplant stuff was discussed well before he signed his NLI to Providence. They are trying to use his Aunts unfortunate health as an out, so he can help UH, that simple. Davis told Young that he'd release him to anywhere but Houston, and they acted like lil girls. My understanding is that Keno even said go to Rice for all he cares, just not Houston. They balked and thought theyd win on appeal, but lost b/c they're transparent.

Meanwhile, Michael Young is blasting Keno, but the reality is that Keno has always been known as a classy, upwardly mobile, young coach. There is only one thing that has changed from when he signed his LOI, and that's his Dads role. I'm not coming at this uninformed, I'm just pro-Keno and anti-UH

Good info PonyDoh, definitely puts it in a different light.

Gotta love the Providence coach saying if he wants to stay in Houston so unselfishly for his Aunt he can just go to Rice.

The Joe Young saga appears to have come to a close as the Class of 2010 ESPNU 100 shooting guard enrolled at Houston on Monday, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The 6-foot-2 Young will sit out this season after Providence College refused to release him from his Letter of Intent and his subsequent appeal to the NCAA's LOI committee was also denied.

"I'm planning on just sitting out this year, getting stronger, quicker, better," Young told the paper. "I think of this as a blessing from God to sit out this year. He pushed me the right way to sit out a year so I can get all my skills together, my potential."

Young was seeking a release in order to be closer to his ailing aunt in Houston. His father, Michael Young, is the director of basketball operations for the Cougars.
