Game at AAC next year...vs. New Mexico?!?

Surely this is the first game in a triple header featuring the likes of Texas or Duke or someone that people care about?!? I'm glad we're finally getting in the mix for games at the AAC, but 2,000 people wouldn't even come to Moody to see SMU vs. New Mexico!

Notable: Doherty said the contract hasn’t been signed but SMU has agreed to play New Mexico next season at American Airlines Center.

Its about time. This is really positive news. In addition to the game, I'm going to enjoy all the hype about SMU's young talented team & their new HC.

The person to whom I gave my season tickets called this morning and said he counted 48 people on the "bench side" of the coliseum last night. He also asked if I wanted my tickets back! "Nope. Merry Christmas."

I nearly choked on my cereal this morning when I read this. I take it this will be next year's 'Operation Sellout.'

This is something that should have happened a LONG time ago. SMU isn't going to engage the Dallas community if they continue to do what they are doing, namely playing in the Park Cities in games that aren't marketed to the Dallas community. A game at the AAC gives us a marketable event in a visible location.

Sounds like playing a football game at the Cotton Bowl or Cowboys Stadium. However, it will be marketed in the DMN and that's a good thing. Is New Mexico going to be particularly good next year? As an AD, if you can't schedule UNM in a home/home you want to do this deal. Do you think it generates much revenue or is mostly a publicity opportunity and a game vs. a name opponent?

I'll go if I can.

This appears like a "good thing" however, any effort like this will probably appeal more to the alumni base of said "name opponent" and they will bring in the numbers - could turn out to be a home-court advantage for them and not us. Not so sure that would be a "good thing".

Wonder how they'll handle the students/faculty/staff who are used to getting free tix at Moody?

New Mexico will travel. When I lived in Vegas, they would flood Thomas & Mack

we'll see. When they were a top 10 team w/ Kenny Thomas and played at Moody in a conference game, I dont think they brought as many as UTEP usually does

It's totally a positive for all as it's in a ACC venue with well known NM Lobo's coach Steve Alford coming into town to match coaching strategies with our well known coach, Matt ..........hmmmmm. Well it should be fun.
Curiosity seekers will at least be there... :-)

This year they only got 11,000 to the AAC for Aggies vs. Arkansas followed by Gonzaga vs. Baylor, and that included a lot of tickets they gave away at Stars and Mavs games. I thought the Aggies alone would bring in close to that, not to mention Baylor was ranked 9th at the time and Gonzaga is now a household name that people want to see (despite having a down year).
Granted the tickets were vastly overpriced, so hopefully we're followed by some bigger programs or they make the tickets reasonable for the casual fan...otherwise I doubt it brings in much of a crowd outside of the schools' fan bases.

The more I think about this, the more I think this is just another Doh tease. I'll believe it when I see it.

Creighton will play us in Dallas, just saying. Add New Mexico & Creighton and that's a nice group of high mids on the schedule

SMU still plays men's basketball? That's nice.
