Northern Iowa started the year 17-6 with wins over New Mexico, Indiana, Morehead State, Iowa State and TCU among others. Then UNI finished the season 1-7. Ponies finished the year 2-6 but the games were closer.
With a #112 RPI vs. over 200 for SMU (through end of regular season), and being at home, this is going to be a very nice challenge. Go Ponies!

They didn't play a game the other night...they lead by 39 points at one point. They probably didn't get to run any sets or even challenge themselves defensively..... just an exhibition.

Going into a place like Northern Iowa, I just wish we had one additional big. How could Mylo get minutes last year vs A&M early, but can't give us a rebound or foul now? I get the need to go small, it's what brought us, but I'm talking about stealing minutes

When I was doing the blog thing, I stumbled upon Northern Iowa's AD (now former AD) as a good option to replace Copeland. My blog post on the guy wound its way up there and he was mentioned as a candidate in the Des Moines newspaper. So if you ever wonder how rumors get started, there you go. That is all I really think about NIU. As far as I-AA teams go, they are pretty successful. They win their conference occasionally in multiple sports, make the playoffs in basketball and football from time to time. I think they have had several coaches leave for better jobs. All and all, a very solid run mid-major.

I'm sure their success dates back further but the basketball program's success dates back to when Greg McDermott was running the program and took them to the NCAA tournament a couple of times. I think he pulled off a huge upset of Iowa. UNI was a 14 and Iowa was a 3.
When McDermott left to go to Iowa State, he was replaced by his assistant who is still there?
McDermott was tanking with ISU before he ran off to Creighton.
