Not sure if it was a hard and fast rule, or more of just a rule of thumb, much like the phantom double play in baseball, but I distinctly remember hearing numerous times throughout the years growing up that once the ref hits a count of 4, he won't give you a time out, so you got one second to chunk it in, or its a turnover.
From the history of the game, seemed like a legit call to me!
