Postby SmooBoy » Tue Mar 22, 2011 12:20 pm

In the short history of the CIT, Papa has obliterated the single game REB total with his 21 boards. The past leaders:

15 Frank Hassell; Old Dominion (at Bradley, 3/31/09)

13 Joe Ford; Pacific (at Appalachian State, 3/25/10)
13 Frank Hassell; Old Dominion (vs. James Madison, 3/26/09)

12 Maurice Bolden; Southern Miss (at Louisiana Tech, 3/18/10)

11 Anthony Johnson; Fairfield (at George Mason, 3/16/10)
11 Dan Waterstradt; Oakland (vs. Kent State, 3/17/09)

A an interesting aside, the single NCAA record (post 1973) was against us. I have no recollection of this game, but I am guessing our shooting was a bit off.

Rebounds (post 1973): Larry Abney - 35
February 17, 2000
Fresno State vs. SMU
For reasons that aren't completely clear, the NCAA draws a line at the year 1973 for rebounding statistics. The best performance in the "modern era of board work" was Larry Abney's 35-rebound night against Southern Methodist. Abney also posted a 24-board box score that season, and finished the season as the third-ranked rebounder in the nation. After finishing his college career, he spent some time in the D-League, and is currently playing professionally in Australia.

The pre-1973 record is 51, set by Bill Chambers of William & Mary back in 1953.

Papa Dia's 21 rebounds also set a new record for rebounds in UNI's McLeod Center.

Is that the time of the dunk rule or the three point shot rule or both?

Might have an impact on rebounding.

Probably because 1973 was when the NCAA split into its current Division I, II, III format.

OK, not the three:
The NCAA's Southern Conference became the first collegiate conference to use the three-point rule, adopting a 22-foot line in 1980. Over the following five years, NCAA conferences differed in their use of the rule and the distance they required for a three-point shot. The NCAA adopted the 19-foot, 9-inch line nationally in 1986. On May 3, 2007 the NCAA rules committee decided to lengthen the three point line a whole foot to 20 feet 9 inches. This rule will come into effect at the beginning of the 2008-09 season.

Looks like not dunking either:
Dunking was banned in the NCAA from 1967 to 1976. Many have attributed this to the dominance of the then-college phenomenon Lew Alcindor (now called Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) upon his entry into the NCAA. Subsequently, the no-dunking rule is sometimes referred to as the "Lew Alcindor rule."

I think I remember Ira Terrel dunking (when it was banned) and I think he got a technical.
