Why has SMU not sent out an email about tickets for Friday?

Postby Junior » Tue Mar 22, 2011 9:23 pm

Is out athletic department just lagging behind, as ususal?

Do they feel that the usual 1,000 fans is about enough for this game?

They should be promoting the hell out of this game! Yeah, it's only the CIT (spare me your thoughts about playing in a 3rd tier tournament, they're a beating at this point), but our guys are playing deeper into the year than they have in recent memory. Either way, they are OUR GUYS! They deserve our support no matter what tourney they are in our who their opponent is.

I'm Junior, and I approve this message.

I feel it's a drum that's been beaten before, but I have to do it again. SMU doesn't have a marketing department anymore. It's a patch-work from the support staff and SID office, etc. Our athletic department is badly under-staffed. Our SID office is very badly understaffed, and even with proper staffing, it's a job that requires an awful lot, and it's difficult to accomplish everything that needs to get done.

My point isn't to try and put off blame, but I don't think individuals or current staffing are at fault. As a department, we're simply woefully understaffed and overworked.

Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm just another fan these days.

Why has SMU not sent out an email about tickets for Friday?

I think Junior's point (without speaking for him) is what are we doing to reach out to the non-season ticket holders. While I'm glad season ticket holders got the email, at this point, we need all the bandwagoners to jump on board and go too, or else it's just going to be us again (and a bunch of lucky kids that got invited at the expense of some alumni).

Dead on, 2ndalndlong. I'm not a season ticket holder. Work historically has not allowed me to attend weekday or Saturday games. This year was different, so I was able to attend more than normal and caught the bball bug. But I didn't get an email today, so took the initiative to get my own tix for the game Friday.

Just want to see some others show up as well.

They have e-mail addresses for individual ticket buyers but they at SMU are woefully behind the times on centralizing their e-efforts..one side doesn't know what the other side is doing...its weird. I am in the Mustang Club and I can see the lunacy.....and you all know the efforts to keep up with all of us is so lacking...

A lot of the MC efforts are made by volunteer alumni and the student athletes if you're lucky. SMU has the databases, but they rely on us to make the calls, send the emails, etc. A primary reason for this (based on my experience with other similar fund raising organizations) is that the response from a mass email is extremely low, but volunteers with a personalized message really generate a stronger response.

I like the Doh and Orsini voicemails, but I know other alumni (not many but they're out there) that complain about them.

And the point is????......SMU doesn't have the correct information on graduates and they don't centralize it...the data bases are f^&*ked up......the info should be shared around the whole campus..I was calling a donor for MC and the info was f^&^&ed up and the donor is a Cox Board of Director member...he was laughing...

Sure there is: budget.

Little or no money is allocated for marketing, and it has been that way for a couple of years now. If you would like to underwrite the cost of a DMN ad, I'm sure they would accept your donation.

I haven't had the issues you reference making calls with the morgan campaign, but I understand your frustration. Some of my numbers are no longer working, but no big deal. The only issues I've had are with the single ticket purchasers; I've had a lot of TCU and UofH fans on my call sheets that have been pretty vocal.

Budget is only an excuse if you are short-sighted. A $500 ad pays for itself if it brings in even 50 people.

Now, we're going to be 4k ahead (31000 for hosting rather than 35000 for a charter...and I bet Cali airport fees are higher than those in Iowa, so 35k is the low end). No reason that 4,000 can't go into advertising.

A) There's no guarantee that an ad brings in 50 people.
B) Someone still has to pay for the ad (see the absence of a marketing budget).
C) $500 in the DMN would bring an ad that is maybe the size of a postage stamp. How many will that bring?
